REPEAT AFTER ME: CADENCE IS NOT INTENSITY! RPMβ RPE!
You can ride any cadence from 60 rpm up to 110 rpm at almost any RPE.
Try it with a power meter. Ride at 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, and 110 RPM starting at zero resistance. Then do the same gradually adding resistance. You can find an RPE of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and even 10 at every cadence, from very, very easy, to moderate, to hard, to very, very hard, to maximal.
Yes, faster cadence will start to affect the heart rate (i.e. increase it) depending on your efficiency and fitness which is related to how much you train leg speed. It will increase RPE slightly and increase HR (how much depends on the fitness of the person), even at low resistance. But in the absence of resistance, high cadence alone is still almost zero power (well, maybe a handful of watts), so it's not equivalent to much actual "work."
Intensity can be measured in RPE, HR, or Power. Not cadence.
Cadence COMBINED with resistance gives you intensity.
Of the 3 measurements of intensity, only power is truly objective.
RPE is subjective, but with proper training, you can teach yourself and your riders how to use it effectively.
HR is the RESULT of your work; it's the cost of the effort not a prescription. It may be affected by completely unrelated variables such as stress, heat, lack of sleep, medications, caffeine, long-term fatigue, etc. etc. etc. But with training, you and your riders can use HR as a goal for LONGER efforts or overall session goals as long as you have done it long enough to know what is normal and what is not.
HR is not effective for short intervals of 2β3 minutes or less.

Nicole Brienzi was born and spent half her life in city of Dorchester then moved to Weymouth. She is a mother of three wonderful children. Nicole has been spinning for about four years and has been instructing for two. She also got certified about six months ago for group fit classes and enjoys doing both cycle and total body burn classes. Check her out THIS Wednesday subbing for Liz at 5 am. Youβll be seeing Nicole a lot in the next couple weeks and hopefully permanently on the schedule soon.
