What is Tuina?

Tuina (pronounced: Twee-nah) is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine focusing on the treatment of Qi imbalances through massage therapy. It is sometimes described as a combination of Japanese Shiatsu, and acupressure massage. Tuina, along with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, make up the main components of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Tuina means "pushing and grabbing", techniques using a mix of soft tissues massage such as gliding and kneading to resolve Qi blockages and stimulate healing within the body on a deeper, energetic level. Similar to acupuncture, Tuina focuses on the same specific points in the body, but instead of needles they are manually massaged.

Some techniques are more gentle and meditative, smaller movements to help minute surface level issues. Other techniques are more active dynamic and target deeper blockages and knots. Manipulation techniques help realign the body's muscle and joints. Other techniques such as stretching and joint mobilization may also be used.
It aids in the treatment of the following conditions:
Arthritis
Back pain
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Constipation
Headache
Menstrual Cramps

Tuina is meant to be a relaxing and invigorating experience. In a typical session, patients are clothed in loose comfortable clothing, a practitioner will base their treatment on the patient’s specific problems.

Tuina is typically used as a complement to other treatments, such as acupuncture, or can be done as an individual treatment. Using both treatments together increase its benefits, with most treatments of Tuina following acupuncture to help restore energy flow, and relax the body's muscles.
