Banned Book Week, Oct. 1-7, 2023. The book community has banned together to make you aware of the danger to our society when someone or some organization decides they know what is best for you. These groups and individuals want to decide what you can and cannot read, listen to, or create according to their personal ideas.
Banned Book Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. Banned Books Week highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas. ALA (American Library Association) is one of the founders of Banned Books Week and a member of the Banned Books Week Coalition, an international alliance of diverse organizations joined by a commitment to raise awareness about intellectual freedom issues and to celebrating and defending the right to read during Banned Books Week and beyond.
To celebrate Banned Book Week, and your intellectual freedom pick up a banned book today. Here are some of the books that the library has for check out. These are off the top 100 banned book list for the last decade.
