BOOK RECOMMENDATION: Are you stressed? Do you wonder why you can’t reason or relate to others because you are struggling with emotional regulation? Do you wonder about the developmental impact of your growing up years? Do you wonder if you experienced trauma? Do you wonder if you are resilient? How do the people in your life factor in your journey as an individual? How does the function of the brain factor into all of this? All of these questions and more are addressed in a book by psychiatrist and neuroscientist, Bruce Perry and his co-author, Oprah Winfrey. The book is entitled, What Happened to You? Conversations on Trauma, Resilience and Healing.
Here are some excerpts: The typical college-age adult is 30 percent “less empathic” and more self-absorbed than twenty years. One study documented a 40 percent increase in psychopathology in American college students over the last thirty years; the authors suggest that this is related to “cultural shifts toward extrinsic goals such as materialism and status and away from intrinsic goals such as community, meaning in life, and affiliation”……Disconnection and loneliness in our society are playing a major role in the increased anxiety, sleep problems, substance use, and depression we’re seeing. A recent study by a team at Harvard found that of all the factors involved in depression, the most powerful were related to connectedness…..One of our major findings is that in determining someone’s current mental health, the history of their childhood relational health – their connectedness – is as important as, if not more important than, their history of adversity. And for children and youth experiencing trauma, the best predictor of their current mental health functioning is their current connectedness.

As we conclude 2023, we wish you all things good this December.
BOOK RECOMMENDATION: If you had to estimate, how happy would you say you are? How healthy would you guess yourself to be? If you are interested in those questions, you might want to pick up the book: Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier (2023) by Arthur C. Brooks and Oprah Winfrey. Here are the titles of some of the first few chapters: Happiness Is Not the Goal and Unhappiness Is Not the Enemy; The Power of Cognition; Choose a Better Emotion.
As a psychologist, I like how Brooks and Winfrey dial into the four essentials for being happy and healthy – faith, family, friends, and work. They cite relevant research and practical suggestions for achieving greater happiness and healthiness in life and relationships. I recommend this book strongly to pick up and read in order to achieve a healthier life – emotionally, mentally, relationally, and spiritually.
