Katherine Dunham revolutionized Black dance in the U.S., blending African and Caribbean influences with modern dance. As an anthropologist and choreographer, she inspired a generation of Black dancers, including Alvin Ailey who first saw the Katherine Dunham Dance Company in 1945 at the Biltmore Theater in Los Angeles.

In 1972, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater commissioned Dunham’s work 'Choros,' a dance based on a Brazilian Quadrille, first performed in 1943. In 1987, the Company premiered the evening length work 'The Magic of Katherine Dunham.'

In 1930, Katherine Dunham formed Ballet Negre, which was one of just a few ballet companies available to black students at the time. Shortly thereafter, struggling with a lack of financial support, the company disbanded. In 1933, she opened her first dance school in Chicago (the Negro Dance Group) for young black dancers. In 1934, she revived Ballet Negre with performers from her dance school. In 1939, she became the dance director of the New York Labor Stage, and six years later she opened the Dunham School of Dance in New York.
Miss Dunham was an international personality. She used bodies in motion to create ties among peoples of the African diaspora. During a tour in the late 1940s, one critic called Dunham an “ambassador with hips.” Miss Dunham said about her dance company: “Without Europe, we couldn’t have survived” (Aschenbrenner, conversation with the author, 1978). The Dunham Company toured to enthusiastic reviews from the 1930s through the 1950s, including venues in Mexico, London, Paris, South America, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia and throughout the United States.

The inimitable dancer, actress, and singer Chita Rivera died today at the age of 91, her daughter Lisa Mordente announced.

Rivera was a Broadway legend who inspired generations of performers. She first appeared on the cover of Dance Magazine as a break-out star in November 1957. “Here is a performer of enormous individuality with a dance approach quite uniquely her own," wrote Leo Lerman. "She has made the transition from chorus to star with seemingly no effort, shedding irritating mannerisms and replacing them with the superbly assured manner of, with luck, a future great lady of the American musical theatre.”

As we plan a larger tribute to this deeply influential performer, read more about Rivera’s 1957 cover story here: https://www.dancemagazine.com/chita-rivera-tbt/

What Neuroaesthetics, a New Field of Research, Can Tell Us About What Dance Does to Our Brains and Bodies 12/28/2023

What Neuroaesthetics, a New Field of Research, Can Tell Us About What Dance Does to Our Brains and Bodies With its unique brain–body connection, dance is at the very center of neuroaesthetics, or the science of how the arts affect our brains, and therefore our bodies. Early findings of this still-emerging field are confirming what dancers and dance lovers have long known implicitly: that experiencing ...

Ailey mourns the passing of Delores Browne, a pioneer of Blacks in Ballet and long time friend, supporter, and collaborator of the organization.

Delores had an illustrious dance career and notably appeared in the same Ailey performance in which 'Revelations' first premiered in 1960.

As a sixteen year old at the Judimar School in Philadelphia, she taught a young Judith Jamison. Later in New York in 1974, Browne became the first director of The Ailey School’s scholarship program.

We’re so thankful for Delores’ contribution to both our organization and the dance community as a whole.
