The 2024 Indigenous Fashion Show at Tacoma Art Museum is a vibrant celebration of Indigenous culture, part of the In the Spirit Festival in collaboration with the Washington State History Museum. This event, featuring contemporary Indigenous fashion, highlights the creativity of Indigenous designers. Also happening the same week as the Hilltop Neighborhood Walking Tour, followed by Tacoma's Third Thursday museum and art walk, where visitors can enjoy free admission to local museums and galleries, supported by Tacoma Creates, ArtsFund, and members.

Join Downtown On the Go, 2nd Cycle Tacoma's Community Cycle Center, and Alchemy Skateboarding for the third annual free Hilltop Family Bike Day on Saturday, August 17th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.! Enjoy a fun, youth-friendly bike obstacle course, skateboarding, free helmets for youth, snacks, and bike decorations. There will be a slow family-friendly group bike ride at 1 p.m. lead by Kidical Mass Tacoma. Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or you’re just getting started, this event is accessible for everyone.
We’ll be set up at Edna Travis Park at 2301 S J St from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the Kidical Mass group ride departing from Edna Travis Park at 1 p.m. and returning by 2 p.m. We’ll have limited youth bikes and skateboards for kids to borrow for the bike course and skate activity. Please note, all participants must sign in and complete a waiver before joining in on the fun, and you must have your own bike or skateboard to join the group ride. Minors must be signed in by an adult.

Yesterday, DOTG joined Pierce Transit to celebrate their receiving a $14.7 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration. These funds will allow Pierce Transit to purchase four new battery electric buses and install new charging equipment. This is a great step towards expanding their zero-emission fleet and will help us to reach our climate goals as a region. We were excited to celebrate this big win!

Tacoma Pride Festival is this weekend! All Tacoma Pride attendees are encouraged to walk, roll, bike, and take the T-Link light rail to Tacoma Pride. Parking downtown is not feasible, and the Old City Hall T-Link stop is right next to Pride.

In case you missed it: Pierce Transit offering free rides to cooling shelters, at least through end of service on July 9th. Free rides may be extended if extreme heats persist.
During extreme heat, Pierce Transit often partners with Pierce County to provide free transit rides to and from cooling centers.
In the event that we experience extreme heat over the holiday weekend, the free round trips will be available throughout the day and evening for passengers who tell the driver they are traveling to or from a cooling center or shelter.

Tacoma’s new Pride-themed mural, created by Public Works Artist-in-Residence Natalie Dupille, is now on display at the corner of South 9th Street and Pacific Avenue, just in time for Tacoma’s Pride celebrations. Supported by the Environmental Services Department and the Arts and Cultural Vitality Division, this mural is part of the "If It Hits the Ground, It Hits the Sound" campaign, raising awareness about stormwater pollution. The mural celebrates Tacoma's q***r community and highlights the connection between diversity in nature and society. Mayor Victoria Woodards and Council Members Olgy Diaz and Kristina Walker praised the mural for its beauty, inclusivity, and environmental message, underscoring Tacoma’s values of support, inclusion, and environmental consciousness. Dupille, a renowned cartoonist and illustrator, sees this project as a celebration of different identities and a call for a cleaner Puget Sound.

Downtown On the Go (DOTG) is thrilled to announce our ongoing collaboration with Safe Routes to School (SRTS) to bring Traffic Garden events to our community. Yesterday's Salishan Traffic Garden Pop-Up event was a resounding success! Children received free helmets and complimentary youth bike tune-ups. Plus, families enjoyed tasty juice drinks and snacks.
These events are designed to provide a safe and fun environment for kids to learn important traffic safety skills while enjoying a variety of engaging activities. Navigating a mini-streetscape specifically designed for kids, it's a fantastic space where children can walk, bike, scoot, skate, or roll about, all while learning essential traffic safety skills through play.
