Shh…don’t tell too many people but Chili Thai is having its soft opening today at 1129 Broadway (the space formerly occupied by Galanga Thai Cuisine) so you might want to go down there and check it out!

Open for lunch and dinner.

I guess it now just comes down to the question, who will be left standing, Fujiya Japanese Restaurant or Keith Richards?

Some months ago, Yim and I determined that, after founding Galanga Thai Cuisine in downtown Tacoma more than 20 years ago, and running it ever since, we were ready to move on to new adventures.

This afternoon, we signed the papers selling Galanga Thai. Our space at 1129 Broadway will be closed for a few months for remodeling and redecorating until it re-opens as the newest branch of the Chili Thai (www.ChiliThai.com) family of Thai restaurants.

We want to extend our deepest thanks to the Tacoma community for supporting us these past two decades – as customers, employees, downtown neighbors, family and friends! We’ve grown roots in the area, and look forward to seeing you around.

Here’s a delicious looking – and tasting – variation that we discovered only after a customer ordered it: Pad See Iew noodles with green beans added!

The slightly crunchy green beans are in perfect harmony with the entree’s g*i lan greens (aka Chinese broccoli) and both stir-fru up nicely with the chewy, fresh wide noodles in sweet dark sauce.

The “other sauce” (i.e. not the peanut sauce) served with our Chicken Satay is a kind of relish...or maybe it’s more of a salsa...but because no term fits exactly, on the menu we call it cucumber salad. It has sliced cucumbers, bell pepper and shallots, and is sweet, but also tart from its vinegar base. Fans of this sauce are fewer than for the peanut sauce but they are VERY passionate.

When asked if our Nam Tok is a green salad, we’ve gotten used to saying, no, it’s more of a grilled meat (pork or, as shown here, beef) salad. But - on the other hand - look at all those leaves! I see fresh basil, mint, leaf lettuce, cilantro, cabbage. Maybe we shouldn’t be so quick to deny Nam Tok’s green salad-ness?
