A reminder that the Choir of the West Tour Homecoming Concert, directed by Dr. Brian Galante, has been rescheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, February 22 at 7:30pm in Lagerquist Concert Hall.
The program is titled "The Gift to Sing", taken from Damien Geter's evocative setting of the James Weldon Johnson poem. Centered on themes of resilience, comfort, hope, renewal, and reimagining, we also feature works by Felix Mendelssohn, William Byrd, Roderick Williams, Saunder Choi, Marques L.A. Garrett, Kestutis Daugirdas, Brian Galante, Caroline Shaw, Craig Hella Johnson, Nilo Alcala, and Juris Karlsons.

The 2024 Northwest High School Honor Band will feature music performed by over 250 of the finest high school musicians from the region. This performance is a culmination of two days of intense rehearsals with guest clinicians. This year’s Honor Band is under the direction of Dr. Ron Gerhardstein. For those in the Portland and Salem area, we are delighted to announce performances offered during our 2023 Choir of the West Spring Tour: we'll be at St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Portland on Thursday, April 20 (7:30pm); and St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem on Friday, April 21 (7:30pm). We'll also perform a Tour Homecoming Concert on Tuesday, April 25 (7:30pm) in Lagerquist Concert Hall, and that performance will be live streamed.
Works include exquisite Psalm settings by Johannes Brahms and Caroline Shaw, significant contemporary works for choir and piano by Jake Runestad and JAC Redford, and two works written during--and in response to--the pandemic by Jennifer Lucy Cook and Ken Burton. We'll be joined in performance by collaborative pianist Amy Boers.

The J-Term Opera, The Elixir of Love by Gaetano Donizetti, opens tonight in Eastvold Auditorium at 7:30pm! This hilarious opera follows a snake oil salesman, a soprano and a smitten tenor and is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. Tickets are $5-17 and doors open at 7pm
Relive, or experience anew, the beauty and excitement of our 2022 Christmas Concert, entitled "Peace". Recorded live in PLU's Lagerquist Concert Hall on December 11, 2022, the concert features the Choir of the West (Brian Galante, conductor), Chorale (Tiffany Walker, conductor), University Symphony Orchestra (Jeffrey Bell-Hanson, conductor), and University Organist Paul Tegels in a variety of works celebrating hope, light, and peace in this Christmas season. Lighting design by Anna Van Vleet '23 and Amanda Sweger, with video and audio production by Travis Pagel and Patrick Brockwell. The recording will be available beginning at 5:00pm PST on Wednesday, December 21, 2022. Merry Christmas!

Next week on campus we are proud to host Musicians United for Ukraine, a concert benefiting the Leleka Foundation which is providing medical supplies to Ukraine. This moving and engaging program includes traditional melodies played on a bandura (the iconic Ukrainian psaltery), art songs by romantic and contemporary composers, works for organ, as well as chamber music for piano, cello, and violin.
Join us Thursday, June 23 at 7:30pm in Lagerquist Concert Hall for an unforgettable concert performed by international artists, including our own professors Lark Powers, Cassio Vianna, and Paul Tegels. Tickets are $10 or free for students.

Musicians United for Ukraine (Tacoma/Parkland) Music of Ukrainian composers performed by an international team of artists. All proceeds support delivery of medical aid into the war zone.
In May, Professor of Music Gina Gillie attended the 2022 International Women’s Brass Conference in Denton, TX as an awardee and panelist. Her composition for eight trombones, Mountain Ascent, won the 2022 IWBC Composition Contest and was premiered at the conference by the University of North Texas Trombone Consortium. As part of the contest award, Gina served on a panel discussion of composers and received a cash prize. Additionally, throughout the conference four other performances of Gina’s works were presented: To the Seasons (soprano, horn, and piano), Horn Quartet No. 1, Scenes from the Bayou (brass trio), and Song for the Lost (trumpet and piano). Gina plans to spend the summer working on current commissions including a piece for solo horn and fixed media which will be premiered in September in the Octave9 space at Benaroya Hall.

First up at 3 pm is our final Organ Series Recital for this academic year. Dr. Paul Tegels, our University Organist, will play selections by J. S. Bach, Mendelssohn, Scheidemann, and César Franck.
