Welcome back, Lutes! We’re thrilled to have our amazing students back on campus so that the buzz of laughter, learning, and connection fill the air once again! 🌟
Have an amazing year!
For our final corner of the summer, we bring you the Centennial Bell!
The campus received the centennial bell as a gift in 1990 from former President and Mrs. William O. Rieke to celebrate the university's 100th anniversary. This elegant steel and brick structure stands 12 feet high and 15 feet wide.
We cannot wait to continue the tradition and ring in a new academic year next week! Its melodious chime signifies the beginning of a new chapter for students, faculty, & staff. Let the sound of the centennial bell inspire all on campus to strive for greatness in the upcoming year 💛 🖤
⭐ The 2025 Northwest High School Honor Band will feature music performed by over 250 of the finest high school musicians from the region.
⭐ The final performance is a culmination of two days of intense rehearsals with guest clinicians under the direction of Dr. Ron Gerhardstein.

Our penultimate work of art is the James Holloway Memorial outside of MBR. This piece is a transparent etched glass slab with a memorial “Excellence” plaque mounted on a brick base.
The memorial, designed by close friend Kathryn Wold Sparks, characterizes the wide-ranging nature of James Holloway’s interests.
Dr. James Holloway (1960-2001) was the University Organist and Professor of Organ and Church Music at PLU where he served as a studio teacher, musicologist and choral conductor. He created the Mentorship Program for Vocations in Church Music at PLU and taught in the Honors and Freshman Experience programs.

Happy Tuesday Lutes! Can you believe we are halfway through August? You can see this beautiful work of art for yourself when everyone is back together on campus in about 3 weeks!
This is the The Scandinavian Prow, located on east side of campus in front of AUC. The sculpture, a reminder of the university’s Nordic roots, is 25 feet tall and weighs 2,200 pounds. In the spring of 1992, the Viking ship prow made its way from Anacortes, Washington, to its present location in front of the Scandinavian Cultural Center in the University Center.
The planking is Western Red Cedar, and the fasteners are copper rivets and roves from Norway. The artist, Paul Schweiss, is a boat builder with Nordic connections.

Thought we've run out of art to share? No way! Designed by Kathryn Wold, Generations of Oak is a Corten Steel tree sculpture that stands in lower campus by MBR.
Donated by R. Gene and Esther Grant, the sculpture was dedicated to honor the visit of their Majesties Harald V & Sonja, King and Queen of Norway in Oct. 1995. The plates are attached to a cast in place concrete armature. Former PLU Professor David Keyes assisted with the installation & fabrication.
Still thinking about this day! We are so proud of our Class of '24 and we can't wait to see what's next for you. Drop a couple of emojis in the comments to describe your summer so far!
Its that time of the week again! 🕜 👀 Let's take a look at The Anderson Clock Tower for corner!
This tower has displayed the time to students outside the University Center since 1970. Herman and Vivian Anderson funded the original 60-foot tower and the later restoration. The new clock tower is made of Alaskan yellow cedar and has a cedar bench work around a concrete base. Did you know it chimes on the hour? 🔔
You already know! Corner is back with a lesser known, but just as wonderful work of art! We give you Valhalla's Doorbell 🔔
This 10 foot metal sculpture by Tom Torrens can be found outside Ingram Hall.
This piece was a gift to Pacific Lutheran University from Dr. Richard and Marcia Moe. This piece continues the theme of bell and basic geometric shapes that can be found elsewhere on campus!
Did you know that Ingram Hall has a darkroom? It's true! Drew Lindgren's photography course has been hard at work this summer learning about everything from pinhole photography to all things digital 📸
You guessed it! It's time for corner! Located in Red Square in front of KHP, sits a bronze bust of Martin Luther commemorating the 500th anniversary of his birth on April 30, 1484. It is one and a half scale and was commissioned by the 500th Anniversary Committee.

Welcome back to Campus Art Corner! 🖌️ This week, we're taking a look at The Sisters. This metal sculpture is named in honor of Agnes Hougen Stuen (1883-1982) & Esther Hougen Davis (1896-1979). Esther was a bookkeeper at PLU during the 1930’s & 40’s and Agnes was a teacher and wife of Professor Ole Stuen. This sculpture was commissioned in 1983 by Esther's son & PLU regent, George Davis.
