I pushed around some paint until I recognized some shapes; learning how to use . And then it turned into a creepy Peter Pan painting (that's a Hook-shaped hole in the skullπŸ™Š).

Acrylics on canvas. The reference was a bit more nuanced than I anticipated, so it was some harder lessons than I was planning to learn πŸ˜‚

Version 3 of this particular piece has met its own tragic end. Switching to oils really does bring a litany of lessons. But at least through this one, I learned that oils would make the effect I was looking for. Wish the loss hadn’t come so near the end πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Anyway. If y’all have ways to remove gold leaf from oil without using a scalpel, I’m all yours. (If you’re wondering, gold leaf sticks to the oils - even when completely dry -, not just the sizing medium. The more you know). On to the other painting and maybe one day I’ll come back to this one again (again) ✌🏻

When I start in on the final touches, I like a clean palette. Declutter the colors, visuals, and start fresh. Then the painting can be my only focus, and that helps me to better see what really needs to be done.

Thanks for watching! I hope you like this new painting :)

From a 2014 sketch, to a new sketch where I evolved the original design, then the final painting. Seeing this journey - measured in years - is always rewarding. I hope you like!

A ballpoint sketch. Could make a cool painting πŸ€”

I drew this way back in the good ol' days of 2019. Just to use as a sketch that I could trace and make into a painting. I restarted that painting with a fresh coat of white two or three times, and couldn't manage to get the effect I saw so clearly in my head. But now that I recall my original design, I wonder if it was meant to be done in oils rather than acrylics? This piece might see the light of day again, we'll see... (but if it does, I will be addressing that nose😢)

Sometimes I get to make custom work for Uncorked Canvas. And sometimes it is a super epic request.

For a great group of dudes and an epic bachelor party out in a cabin on the waterfront. Where bald eagles were diving into the water outside the windows, and he wasn't even willing to help when we asked if he could carry some jewelry for us πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Painting a thin glaze of green over the city here in oil, making the layers of acrylic all mesh together. This also knocks down some of the areas that were too dark, so there's the added benefit of kicking back the background. I'll have to add some more layers after I make my adjustments, but it's adding the atmosphere that I'm looking for.

Still finding that oils make me pretty uncomfortable to use, but each day I'm learning more. Here's to getting better by showing up 🀟

Ehehehehehe don't ask cause I don't know. This drawing is 11 YEARS OLD. What even is time?
My dig is turning up some and friggin' weird stuff too. But who hasn't found a butterfly and tried to eat it? Amiright?? (also I know it's Friday)

Timeline photos 06/04/2021

Someone asked me about this one - with a very serious expression : "What do the drips mean?" And the age-old struggle of the artist ensued. Do I make up some esoteric and deep meaning. That it's to illustrate the struggle of these creatures to remain stable and vibrant in a world that wants to see their stripes displayed for its pleasure, or do I go with reality, "paint drip cool. So I didn't wipe it up."

This one was a storybook challenge with a fellow artist we had a long while back. A little stylized and sinister. I like the dramatic lighting, as per usual. See if you spot the detail hidden in the trees...

I don't quite recall what inspired this one. It's made with three colors, and, honestly, it is so much fun limiting supplies. Less pressure? Taking decision-making out of the process is freeing to the process. (maybe).

I do remember that the main statue was just a broken pillar in the reference I had, and as I worked it looked like a person. So I painted it like that and it transformed into a piece with a bit more story...

A for the lovely Leanna. In memoriam, and an honor to be asked to create.

If you remember the original one I posted a while back, that one went missing in delivery, and was lost to someone's doorstep somewhere in Texas (probably). Well good riddance, because I definitely prefer the second version. God used it for practice, and humility lol. I don't feel sorry that the dude kept it now πŸ˜‚
Anyway. Watercolors, and a truly exciting project with its little challenges and exciting rewards. Hope you like β™₯️

A little pencil drawing.
I've neglected my pencils in recent years. I didn't realize how long I've been a ballpoint pen addict until flipping through my old sketchbooks and seeing how many years I've used Bics. I started out my practice with pencils, but the allure of needing only one tool to create a drawing (and the lack of reflection and deep blacks of pen) has won out over time. I do love the softness you can get with pencil. Plus, you can erase 🀟 Nice to mix it up every once and a while. #253
