Great post about Jeffrey.
“I wanted kids to go in there and see a character who is like them or where they are from, that they see a positive representation of who they are—and who they can be.”—Jeffrey Veregge (Port Gamble S’Klallam, 1974-2024)
We mourn the passing of visionary artist Jeffrey Veregge. Known for his prolific cover art and mural work, Veregge brought Northwest Coast formline design and aesthetics to the world of comic book superheroes and villains, reimagining who and what these classic characters could represent. Fans dubbed Veregge’s style “Salish Geek.” Veregge was known as a generous and kind member of the growing Indigenous comic creator community. He encouraged others to continue creating, innovating, and claiming space in a sphere that hasn’t always accurately reflected Native realities.
Early in his career, Veregge worked as a graphic designer for nonprofits and other clients. When his tribe asked him to design a logo, he apprenticed with Tsimshian artist and master wood carver David Boxley to learn how "to break the rules" of formline design. In 2015, putting his portfolio online led to a series of lifechanging opportunities. By December 2015, Veregge was invited to draw the first cover for the reboot of “Red Wolf,” Marvel’s first American Indian character that debuted in 1970. This pivotal moment brought Veregge’s love for his culture and superheroes to the mainstream comic audience.
Veregge’s “Of Gods and Heroes,” illustrates the invasion of Earth by celestial beings who target New York City for their landing. Their thunderous arrival creates a disturbance felt by Superheroes across the globe who unite for a heroic confrontation. His vibrant hybrid of Indigenous and popular culture reminds us that for Native artists the fantastical notion of alien invasion is not imaginary but a very real part of history. “Of Gods and Heroes” is currently on view at our New York City museum, and recently became part of the museum’s permanent collection. The exhibition was curated by Kathleen Ash-Milby (Navajo Nation). Learn more about Veregge's life and work from our Summer 2019 issue of : https://www.americanindianmagazine.org/story/gods-and-heroes
We offer our condolences to Veregge’s family, loved ones, the Indigenous comic creator community, and all who appreciate and have been inspired by his work.

With very heavy hearts we are sad to say that local artist Jeffrey Veregge has passed away. Jeffrey was at our show several times as a guest, he combined tribal art with pop culture with amazing results. On top of that he was an incredibly kind man with a big heart.
For 1025 days he fought lupus of which 925 of which were spent in a hospital but he never up in his fight.
Our hearts go out to his family.
The legendary and amazing Trina Robbins, a pioneer female creator in comic books, has sadly passed away. If you didn't know Trina, she was a big part of the underground comic book movement and was the first woman to draw Wonder Woman. On top of her work in the comic book industry, she was also a fashion designer, a historian with numerous books, and a great person!
If you’re in the Seattle area Dreamstands could use some love and support.
Well, folks, it’s another lovely day in Seattle, so that means we’ve had another burglary (if you can even call it that)
The cretins rammed the front of the building with a vehicle, so we are going to be closed today for repairs and structure stabilization. Can’t have people inside the store, sorry.
HOWEVER, if you do want something call ahead, or come up to the giant hole in the wall, and we can do a curbside pickup for your merch. Or if you want your stuff mailed to you, we can do Paypal or CC over the phone as well.

Ramona was a pioneer for women in the comic book industry.
It comes with great sadness to announce that Ramona Fradon has passed
away just a few moments ago. Ramona was 97 and had a long career in the comic book industry and was still
drawing just a few days ago. She was a remarkable person in so
many ways. I will miss all the great conversations and laughs we had. I
am blessed that I was able to work with her on a professional level, but
also able to call her my friend. If anyone who wishes to send a card to the family, Please
feel free to send them to Catskill Comics and I'll be happy to pass them
along. You can send cards to Catskill Comics " Fradon Family", Po Box 264, Glasco,NY 12432
