Selin Saka is a 2nd year Master of Counseling (M.C.) student who is graduating this Spring 2024. Her master’s thesis topic examined whether a primary caregiver’s mental health stigma is associated with Middle Eastern emerging adults’ help-seeking intentions, and whether peer social support can buffer this association. This is a very innovative topic, as most studies examine one’s own self-stigma yet neglect the role of families’ influence and highlights an understudied, yet important population of Middle Eastern families. With her persistence, she defended her thesis on April 9. While Selin’s innovative thesis idea is impressive, this is not the only aspect she has worked on throughout the program. She has one peer-reviewed manuscript as second author, which received a revise and resubmit, and two additional manuscripts in preparation. She also wrote a first-author encyclopedia entry on childhood experiences and jealousy, which was published in 2023. Selin also presented at two national conferences last year, and she has worked in multiple research labs at ASU. In addition to research, Selin has had vast teaching experiences in addition to clinical experiences working with children in the welfare system, college students who have been victims of s*xual or domestic violence, victims of s*x trafficking, and families. As demonstrated, Selin goes above and beyond her required coursework in order to help and support communities in need through her research, clinical work, and advocacy.
Lets congratulate Selin!!
