"Coming to campus for the first time can be intimidating, but very rewarding," says Dachi Tabatadze (BS Business Data Analytics & Supply Chain Management '25). As an international student, he’s benefited from joining clubs and taking on leadership roles, as well as dedicated resources available at W. P. Carey.

“I have individual academic advisors for both of my majors, as well as career coaches for both majors,” he says. “It makes it really easy for me to find opportunities that are more tailored for international students and companies who are willing to work with international students.”

For those who have the drive and passion for entrepreneurship, receiving the right education can be the extra step needed to become a successful business owner.

Mike Shufeldt (MBA '23) knew that a Full-time MBA degree from ASU’s W. P. Carey School of Business would help him make a big leap in his career. By the end of his first year in the program, he had already achieved his goal of starting a business.

"I was able to immediately utilize what I learned in the program," he says. "My first year in the MBA covered a lot of foundational skills. Being able to take that and translate it to the business that we were running was amazing."

Now Shufeldt has two companies under his belt — Ignite Healthcare Solutions, a healthcare consulting company, and Xcellerant Ventures, a venture capital firm. Founding a business is always easier with a partner, and Shufeldt found the perfect fit with his wife, whose previous work experience in healthcare consulting helped them build Ignite Healthcare Solutions while he was still in the MBA program.

"She is an amazing consultant, and we were able to use her expertise to build this company and start bringing on a team, while I helped run the business and finance side.” After two years, Ignite now has its own office in Scottsdale, Arizona, with 15 employees making up the team and Shufeldt as the Chief Financial Officer. His other company, the Phoenix-based venture capital firm Xcellerant Ventures, is also within the healthcare industry, where Shufeldt has carved out a niche for himself.

Shufeldt was drawn to the entrepreneurship and finance concentrations in the Full-time MBA program. Both areas of study continue to play a big role in current work for his companies.

"A class I took on entrepreneurial finance was one of my favorites," he says. "I use the models and financial valuation techniques we learned in that class to this day. I use it on the venture capital side when reviewing companies, and in our startup, Ignite."

One thing that sets W. P. Carey apart from other business schools is that the number of real-world, hands-on learning opportunities we offer. Just ask one of the 12 business students who are at the Olympics this summer, studying global branding and sports marketing.

The group will be in Paris for the entire three-week event, interning for the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee and attending an executive leadership speaker series featuring Olympic partners and sponsors. They also have the opportunity to attend three Olympic events — the women's soccer final, beach volleyball and rugby — and they’ll be spending time immersing themselves in French culture and history.

The idea to take a team to the Olympics was the brainchild of Associate Teaching Professor of marketing Daniel McIntosh and Clinical Associate Professor of marketing Christopher Lee, with help from faculty associate of marketing Scot Smythe.

"We want students to take away an appreciation for sport and its ability to connect people across the globe," Lee said. "It's a neat opportunity to experience how sports motivate and inspire people while simultaneously learning about the business side of the event."

Entrepreneurs Melissa James and Jye-Ling Lu are recent graduates of the W. P. Carey Full-time MBA program. Both James and Lu came into the program as business owners, and both had been interested in pursuing their master's to help their startups thrive.

James is the co-founder of We Don't Lift, a motorsports safety gear company started in 2015 with her business partner. Lu founded her company The Curvyou, an inclusive sportswear brand, with her twin sister in 2021.

James and Lu heartily agree on the most important draws to the W. P. Carey classroom for business owners — the unique networking opportunities, the applicability of the education, and the resounding support.

"At the beginning of the program, I had really bad imposter syndrome," James admits.

Her turning point? The support from the entire W. P. Carey community.

"Everyone was so supportive the entire time, telling me how amazing and strong I was, how I was here for a reason," James continues. "That's the most incredible gift that this MBA program has given me."

Lu said one aspect that spoke to her as a business owner was how applicable classroom learnings were to her blooming business. "I felt like every class I took, I could apply into my business," Lu says.

Both James and Lu encourage aspiring entrepreneurs to stay confident in themselves and stick with the process through difficult times. "Put yourself out there and don't be afraid of being different or being criticized. It's about going out there for yourself," Lu says.

W. P. Carey student Camille S. Campbell believes the beauty and culture of Ukraine should be preserved and shared, even in a time of war.

“After getting involved with activism locally and participating in rallies, I yearned to do more to support children in Ukraine and share the beauty of Ukrainian culture. That's why I wrote 'Colors of Ukraine,' which is published in both English and Ukrainian,” she said.

Campbell hopes to make the book, which is aimed at 6- to 10-year-old readers and elementary educators, an art therapy resource for children affected by war trauma.

Honors student recognized with international business fraternity’s highest honor | ASU News 06/03/2024

Andrew Amazeen has always been interested in money and math, so it's no surprise he graduated last month with three degrees, in Accounting, Computer Information Systems, and Data Analytics. He is looking forward to completing his Master of Accountancy and Data Analytics over the next few months, and he's already secured a full-time job offer with Deloitte after he finishes his graduate program.

His advice for those still in school: "Go one step at a time. College can be a lot to take in, and it is even more difficult because of the pressure to manage your finances, find internships, join clubs and secure a full-time job after graduation. There are many things you cannot control. Instead, focus on what you can control and try not to dwell on the past. If you get rejected from a job, how will you adjust? Ensuring you can deal with adversity and not letting the first obstacle stop you are valuable skills that will benefit you long after college."
