Calhoun Co., the new bridge on Rice Road over Falling Creek opened today. The bridge is about six miles north of Morgan. It is part of a Georgia DOT project to replace six locally-owned bridges in four Southwest Georgia counties. The old bridge was built in 1958. Replacement of these bridges is made possible through the Design-Build Bridge Replacement Program that allows Georgia DOT to replace and update local bridges deemed structurally deficient. Bridges are “bundled” into one contract to maximize efficiency and streamline delivery during final design and construction. 511 Georgia Calhoun County, Georgia Calhoun County GA Sheriff's Office Calhoun County School System WALB News 10

News for Cordele/Crisp County: US 41/State Route (SR) 7 traffic in Crisp County is expected to be traveling along a new alignment and across the new Cedar Creek bridge Aug. 27.

The new bridge less than two miles south of Cordele replaces one that was built in 1928 and widened in 1955. That bridge did not meet current design standards and it was old and classified as scour critical. Scouring is erosion around a bridge's foundation that is caused by flowing water.

Construction brings wider shoulders to the bridge and roadway. The bridge is slightly elevated to accommodate sight distance on side streets. After traffic has shifted, the contractor will realign Joe Wright Drive to improve the skew angle of its junction with US 41/SR 7.

The new bridge was built adjacent to the old structure so no detour was required when construction started in October 2023. The total cost of the project is approximately $5.5 million, which includes preliminary engineering, right of way acquisition and construction. The construction contract was awarded to Griffin Grading and Concrete LLC. The old bridge will be removed. Check this out, paving on the new Liberty Expressway lanes for the (also) new overpass. This photo is from two days ago; today, the contractor is applying the topping to the lanes. Look for traffic to likely move from the temporary Expressway lanes to the overpass sometime in September. Once traffic is moved, the contractor will remove the temporary lanes to clear the way for completion of the roundabout and the construction of new lanes that will become the N Westover Blvd Extension (it will be under the overpass, connecting to Ledo Road). Current scheduled completion date is December 2024. Back in 2016, a GDOT contractor finished converting the multi-legged intersection of US 319 Bu/SR 33 at Sylvester Highway and First Street on the north side of Moultrie to a single-lane roundabout. We were curious about the impact the roundabout had on traffic crashes and injuries. Not surprisingly, both decreased. Numbers have long shown that roundabouts work by slowing traffic and reducing conflict points among vehicles, which reduces the number and severity of crashes, and improving operations by keeping traffic flowing. If you read the Adel News-Tribune, you already know this, but if you don't ... GDOT this week announced the award of a construction contract to build a single-lane roundabout at SR 76 and SR 37 in Cook Co. The initial activity you'll see at this location will be relocation of utilities. Construction could start in September and the current completion date is late fall 2025. The approximately $4.2 million contract was awarded to lowest qualified bidder Reames and Son Construction Co. Inc. There will not be an off-site detour during construction. Once work starts, please adjust your speed as you travel through this area and be aware of changes in traffic patterns. Bridges Programs 08/06/2024

One other tidbit about GDOT storm activities ... did you know that teams of bridge inspectors were out today inspecting structures known to be prone to flood issues? In SW Ga, they were in Turner, Irwin, Coffee and Calhoun counties, to name a few. Tropical Storm Debby didn't cause water to top any state route bridges and inspectors didn't find any alarmingly high water levels. They did see a lot of swift moving water. Bridge Inspection Supervisor Cameron Britt said that's important because it can cause scouring, which is the removal of sediment around the bridge foundation. They perform these inspections every time our area experiences a weather event like TS Debby, even if it didn't become necessary to close a bridge. Makes you feel good about our bridges, doesn't it? US 41/SR 7 N in Hahira late this afternoon. North lane blocked by tree and power lines. About a quarter mile farther north, a tree is across the road and more power lines are down. GDOT crews don't clear debris like this until the power company is on site. They were understandably busy today. We're not clear of yet. More rain is coming. Our maintenance employees know areas that are prone to flood and will be watching those locations and monitoring creeks and rivers in the coming days. Good source of info for SW Georgia

We're getting a lot of comments asking about potential impacts to specific cities. It is not efficient to answer everyone's question, so it is recommended to check the point-and-click forecast for your location of interest for more info.

GDOT prepares for Tropical Storm Debby 08/05/2024

Tropical Storm Debby, expected to be Hurricane Debby tomorrow, is coming. Though the heaviest rainfall is expected to be in the southeast area of the state, our 31-county district is expected to see impacts, too, and our employees are ready. Please remember if GDOT closes a bridge due to flooding, it must be inspected before it can reopen. If you can't see the roadway through the water, it's a hazard and you need to turn around. Please don't drive around barricades. This also is a good time to download the 511GA app to keep up with what's happening on our state routes. Stay home and off the roads if you can. Stay safe everyone!
