Be the voice for a foster child!CASA volunteers advocate for the best interests of abused and neglec

Court Appointed Special Advocates for children in foster care.

The most common type of child maltreatment is neglect. Often neglect is a proxy for poverty- The struggle of families to meet their children's basic needs due to insufficient financial resources.
In 64% of cases where a child is removed from their home, neglect is cited as the cause. Issues related to unsafe or substandard housing were associated with 9% percent of child removals.
Yet neglect and its root cause of poverty require our vigilance every month to recognize that we can achieve better outcomes for children by building on – and building up – the strengths of their families. In this way, we remove the risk and not the child.
Become a volunteer and help advocate for our community's most vulnerable children by ensuring they and their families get the help and services they need to reunite as fast as possible. For more information, go to our website at www.cpcasa.org or fill out our volunteer application at https://go.cpcasa.org/casavolunteerapplication

When a child is removed from their home because of abuse or neglect, they enter an overburdened child welfare system.

The child experiences trauma not only from the abuse or neglect they endured, but also because they are removed from everything and everyone familiar to them.

Juvenile Court judges make life-altering decisions about abused and neglected children whom they rarely have the opportunity to see or talk to. Because of this, they need help gathering as much information as possible. Although judges hear from caseworkers and attorneys, they often want to hear from one person who is exclusively focused on the children. In these situations, the judge orders a court appointed special advocate, or CASA, to serve on the case. Then the CASA becomes the voice of the child.

Coastal Plain CASA staff just arrived to the Georgia CASA Conference in Atlanta. We are thrilled to join CASA staff, volunteers and supporters from all over the state for a day of learning, networking and inspiration. We hear it all the time... "I couldn't be a CASA volunteer. It would break my heart!" Being a CASA volunteer allows you to shed a positive light in a dark situation. YOU can contribute to breaking the cycle of abuse or neglect, creating a ripple effect of positive change for generations to come.

Most people go into their experience as a CASA volunteer hoping to change a child's life, not knowing how much it will change their own. National CASA stated, that judges have reported that CASA volunteers and staff have the most significant impact on promoting long-term well-being.

We’d love to have you join our CASA family. Our mission is to ensure every child in foster care has a CASA volunteer on their case advocating on their behalf.

Last month we had a wonderful In-Service with Waffles and Professor from Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA). They exist as a body of Bikers who empower children to not feel afraid of the world in which they live.

BACA stands ready to support their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization. They work in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA desires to send a clear message to all involved with the abused child that this child is part of their organization, and that they are prepared to lend their physical and emotional support to them by affiliation, and their physical presence. BACA stands ready to shield these children from further abuse. They do not condone the use of violence or physical force in any manner, however, if circumstances arise such that they are the only obstacle preventing a child from further abuse, they stand ready to be that obstacle.

Being removed from their homes and placed in foster care can be a traumatic experience for children. They may feel confused, sad, scared, and angry. Children in care may worry about their parents and siblings. This separation can lead to feelings of abandonment, grief, and distrust, which can cause long-term emotional distress and impact their development. Even in the very best of foster care placements, children will experience the loss of their familiar home surroundings, daily routines, loss of personal belongings, pets, and family members.

Coastal Plain CASA strives to ensure our CASA volunteers are the one constant in a child's journey in care. Depending on their time in care, service providers can come and go, continuing a child's loss of familiarity. We want to make sure children feel safe and know they have a voice looking out for their best interests. Help be a voice for the voiceless and become a CASA volunteer! Happy First Day Back To School! We hope you have a safe and awesome year!

08/01/2024

Children and youth who have experienced abuse or neglect may be re-entering schools after a significant period of remote learning or entering a new school with higher stress and uncertainty levels this year.

But this is also a time for these children and youth to be excited about reconnecting with stability, as they look forward to seeing their friends, teachers, and staff and returning to their extra-curricular activities. As students return to school, the work of a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer continues to be essential now more than ever.

If you're interested in becoming a CASA volunteer, please visit our website www.cpcasa.org, and fill out the Volunteer Application Form. We'll contact you soon after to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
