WWII Camp Wall
The World War II Camp Wall memorializes The Japanese and others that were relocated to incarceration camps during WWII.
We teach about the incarceration experience during WWII, and furthermore, that this should never happen again to any group of people.
The WWIICW stopped by to thank the boy & girl scouts for joining in the Nisei Week Parade. As luck would have it they were celebrating their 2nd quarter accomplishment.
The icing on the cake...one scout is so interested in our project that he wants to work with us for his Eagle Scout project! So meaningful!
Our board member. Sid Morrison has a new book out, a wonderful historical novel about Frederick Douglass.
Photographed are Sid and former WWIICW secretary. Marlen Sanchez.

The WWII Camp Wall mourns the loss of a rare gem in our community, Sakaye Aratani who passed away on March 18, 2024. We have been the recipient of the Aratani CARE grant the past two years, and recognize and appreciate the generosity of the Aratani family.
There is a beautiful tribute at https://www.rememberingsakaye.com/
Born December 11, 1919, in Los Angeles, California, she grew up in Gardena, where her parents ran a chicken farm. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, she temporarily went to live with family in Reedley, California, then was removed to the Poston concentration camp, Arizona. While on a visit to a different camp, Sakaye met her future husband, George Aratani, and they married in Minneapolis, Minnesota, while George was serving in the Military Intelligence Service. After leaving camp, Sakaye and George returned to Los Angeles and raised a family. Sakaye was a founding member of the Montebello Japanese Women's Club, and was also one of the first women to serve on the board of the Sumitomo Bank of California.
