We are so proud of our executive director Chelsea Hsin-Feng Tu for receiving the 2024 emergent leader honor from the Democratic Women of Monterey County! Thank you and so many leaders in the wider Monterey community for being a part of the fight for safe drinking water and clear rivers free from fertilizer and pesticide contamination in communities of color and low-income communties. We are truly honored and grateful for your partnership. When we fight for the underserved, we fight for everyone’s right to clean water.

On May 16, 1906, the Chinese Fishing Village at Point Alones near Pacific Grove was burned down. Today hundreds of people join the Walk of Remembrance to honor these ancestors. We partnered with to create an educational booklet on the history and the contributions of the Chinese villagers to Monterey Bay. The coast belongs to everyone, and everyone’s coastal stories deserve to be told.

In the Central Coast region, Latinx communities are 4.4 times more likely to drink nitrate-contaminated water than white communities. We are proud to be part of a civil rights administrative complaint to the USEPA on the State Water Board’s failure to curb deadly fertilizer nitrogen in the Central Coast region. This failure disproportionately impacts Latinx communities. It is time for the State to take action and end environmental racism. See Monterey County Weekly coverage at: https://tiny.cc/ #

When you turn on the tap, is the water safe to drink or shower with? Thousands of Central Coasts residents, predominantly LatinX, do not have safe drinking water. Find out why in this article by Monterey Waterkeeper and San Jerardo Cooperative: http://tinyurl.com/326kjbya

Agricultural fertilizer runoff pollutes both soil and water supply. To combat this, the Central Coast Water Board placed limits on the over-application of fertilizer nitrogen in fields. Unfortunately, the State Water Board removed these limits in September. As a result, communities will lose access to safe drinking water in the Central Coast. Many low-income communities of color are already threatened by unsafe nitrate levels, and the region’s rivers are contaminated by nitrate and pesticides. Monterey Waterkeeper and our partners are challenging the State’s order to restore clean water for all. Read more at www.montereywaterkeeper.org/announcements

Last Friday, Monterey Waterkeeper and other groups filed a lawsuit urging the State Water Board to limit agricultural nitrate pollution and protect families. Many communities in the Central Coast rely on nitrate contaminated water. 1 out of 4 on-farm domestic wells are undrinkable. See full press release at www.Montereywaterkeeper.org/announcements
