Measles Update - March 2024 Public Health Bulletin for Health Care
Dear colleagues,
In the last two weeks, we have seen three separate introductions of measles into three counties in Michigan. We are seeing increased cases of measles abroad, and increased outbreaks of measles across the United States – in the setting of declining childhood vaccination rates.
Here are a few things we hope you will keep in mind as public health agencies continue to monitor the situation:
Please inform any unvaccinated patients of their risk of measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases. Remind them that this is a good time to get up to date on all vaccines.
Keep measles on your differential diagnosis, even if your patients don’t have a clear history of out-of-state travel – there have been exposures in Michigan, and while we are working to identify and inform all those impacted, occult exposures are possible.
If a patient presents with symptoms suggestive of measles, please isolate them immediately. Patients should be encouraged to call ahead and notify any health care facility of potential measles symptoms/exposures before arrival. It is much better to avoid health care-related exposures than to manage exposures after the fact.
Please contact your local health departments or the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services if you have additional questions, or if you need to report a suspected measles case or exposure. Refer to the reporting guidelines for communicable diseases for more information.
Thank you for your partnership,
Natasha Bagdasarian, MD, MPH, FIDSA, FACP
Chief Medical Executive, State of Michigan
Sarah Lyon Callo, MS, PhD
Senior Deputy Director and State Epidemiologist, MDHHS Public Health Administration

Returning March 2024
The Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units (PEHSUs) are a national network of experts in the prevention, diagnosis, management and treatment of health issues that arise from environmental exposures from pre-conception through adolescence.
Mission Statement
The mission of the PEHSU program is to improve reproductive and children's health by leading the integration of environmental health into clinical care and public health while supporting communities to address historical injustices and ongoing environmental racism and address the existential threat of climate change.
New Information on Lead, Chromium Found in Food
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently warned people not to eat certain brands of cinnamon applesauce pouches because they had elevated levels of lead in them. The heavy metal chromium also has been found in some samples. Find the latest information and links to resources on the PEHSU site.
Find Updated Federal Information on PFAS Concerns
The CDC and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) have released updated information for clinicians to consider when seeing patients who have concerns about per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure or possible health effects. This update incorporates the evolving science and emphasizes the importance of a shared decision-making process, with patients and clinicians working together to address patients' concerns and reduce PFAS exposures. As the science of PFAS exposure and associated health effects evolves, ATSDR will continue to review the science and periodically update this information for clinicians. If you have questions, please contact CDC/ATSDR at [email protected].

Pediatrics Article on Structural Racism in Built Environment:
There are well-documented links between structural racism and inequities in children’s opportunities. Yet when it comes to understanding the role of the built environment, a disproportionate focus on redlining obscures other historical policies and practices such as blockbusting, freeway displacement and urban renewal that may impact contemporary child development. Read the AAP Pediatrics article Historical Structural Racism in the Built Environment and Contemporary Children’s Opportunities.
Importance of Taking Environmental History
An environmental history is a basic component of a complete pediatric history. Learning more about a child’s environment allows pediatricians to identify possible exposures and prevent severe illness or injury. Find more information:

Tap into Radon Awareness Week Resources
January 22-26 is Radon Awareness Week. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths in the United States after cigarette smoke. The CDC’s theme for this year is “What’s Your Radon Story?” Each day will feature facts about radon with supporting graphics, social media messages and a radon story.
Save the date for a webinar on Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. ET. Learn about federal, state and local initiatives to reduce radon in multi-family housing and communities with less access to resources. Register to attend the free webinar.
Listen to the new Environmental Health Nexus podcast in which senior health physicist Adela Salame-Alfie, PhD, discusses radon, the risk it poses and why it is a communication challenge.
The CDC and the ATSDR created an activity book to promote environmental health and educate families, schools, and communities about radon in the environment. Ray, the radon guide, will show you where radon can be found and how it can affect people’s health. Download the activity book.

Region 4 Contributes to Award-Winning Health Information
Region 4, the Southeast Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit, worked with Sharecare Inc. and Emory’s Children’s Environmental Health and Research Translation Center to update public-facing health-related articles. Abby Mutic, PhD, MSN, CNM, the director of the Southeast PEHSU, provided guidance and feedback on ways to enhance existing articles with pediatric environmental health and environmental justice content. Mutic also contributed to two articles focused on asthma and environmental triggers. One of these, "How to Protect Your Child from Allergies and Asthma at School," won a 2023 Digital Health Award, honoring the best online and virtual health resources for patients and professionals. Read the press release here.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to work with our academic and industry partners to get important information and resources to families who need it. Working with the Sharecare team has allowed us to exponentially expand our reach with impactful and relevant content for families and children,” Mutic said.

Task Force Seeks Materials for Guidance on Fire Events
The Chemical Insights Research Institute of UL Research Institutes has convened a task force, Protecting Community Health (PCH), to develop a guidance document to prepare, respond and recover from unexpected fire events and conditions, reduce exposure and support human health. Focus areas include fire and combustion related events such as wildfires or the train derailment of East Palestine, Ohio. Region 9's Vickie Leonard is part of the task force. If any PEHSUs have materials they would like to upload, please send links or pdfs to [email protected].
Pediatric Oncology Project Reports on Accomplishments
The Pediatric Oncology Clinician Education Supplement (POCES) has reported on its Phase Two work and its upcoming projects and goals. The PEHSU Network, led by the Western States PEHSU and in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) conducted a groundbreaking education and training project "Childhood Cancer & the Environment" in 2022-2023. It included five virtual trainings on the science related to pediatric cancer for “champions” from all 10 PEHSU regions, in-person trainings for 40 pediatric oncology providers. Year one of the program also included a significant update of "A Story of Health" free ebook and CE course on childhood cancer (Stephen’s story), creation of fact sheet, a resource list for providers and a slide deck for teaching clinicians about environmental contributors to childhood cancer. These resources along with a summary of the first year accomplishments of the program can be found here.
A second year of work is under way, with an overarching goal to broaden the impact of the activities of year. A daylong Childhood Cancer & the Environment training is scheduled at Baylor Medical Center in late February with the goal of the POCES program supporting the development of a consultative group there that will help clinicians address family questions about the environment and childhood cancer. PEHSU regions 1,2, and 5 are conducting various clinical education programs and PEHSU regions 6, 7 and 10 are collaborating to develop outreach with community health workers.
Region 9 Story of Health Courses Popular
The CDC and ATSDR behavioral scientist staff compared six A Story of Health CE completed courses on the CDC platform–on asthma, developmental disabilities, cognitive decline, infertility/reproductive health, childhood cancer and the health effects of wildfires–and Childhood Resilience, vs. other CDC-sponsored environmental health courses for the period 2018-2023. In their comparison, they found that the value of A Story of Health online courses as the completed courses were cumulatively 13,573 compared with 3,336 for the other courses.
Region 2 Doctor Spreads Knowledge on Lead Dangers
On Jan. 12, Gredia Huerta-Montanez, MD, FAAP, a Mount Sinai adjunct associate professor who serves as Region 2 PEHSU faculty in Puerto Rico, presented at Puerto Rico’s Toxicology Conference, hosted by Emory University. Her presentation focused on “Childhood Lead Exposure in the 21st Century: A Global Environmental Threat." Dr. Huerta-Montanez has been working hard this past year to educate pediatric health professionals across Puerto Rico on lead sources, testing and management with the goal of improving testing rates and thus health outcomes. This presentation builds on that work and provides opportunities for finding new partners to help grow the effort.
Region 2 Hires First Public Health Nurse
In December, the Region 2 PEHSU hired its first public health nurse, Emma Holland, MPH, RN. Holland has worked as a consultant since last summer. Her knowledge and skills will build capacity to address and streamline consultations, identify and apply more efficient communication and outreach mechanisms, and develop and update content for PEHSU resources. The Region 2 team is proud to officially welcome Holland to the team as Mount Sinai staff. Those who attended the recent PEHSU Annual Meeting might remember her from her presentation on the communication road map that was used during the wildfire smoke in New York last summer, which occurred on her first day. She’s been off and running ever since!
This material was supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and funded (in part) by a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (CDC/ATSDR). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) supports the PEHSUs by providing partial funding to CDC/ATSDR through an Inter-Agency Agreement. The findings and conclusions presented have not been formally disseminated by CDC/ATSDR or EPA and should not be construed to represent any agency determination or policy. Use of trade names that may be mentioned is for identification only and does not imply endorsement by the CDC/ATSDR or EPA.

Racism in healthcare puts Black women’s lives at risk. In fact, only 5.7% of U.S. physicians are Black. And hair-based discrimination occurs everywhere from doctors offices to schools. Still today, Black women face an uphill battle when wearing natural hairstyles. But studies show that doctor diversity saves lives! Not to mention, diversity training in medical school reduces racial bias and discrimination, equips doctors with practical knowledge, and again, saves lives.
