International Non-Binary Day!
Even if you don't identify as nonbinary, I'm still expecting all LGBTQ2SIA allies to celebrate & get loud today.
How to start!? Demonstrate OPEN acceptance.
Tell a nonbinary person that you appreciate them, acknowledge that you like them IN PUBLIC, to your friends, to your coworkers, to your damn family.
Don't keep us in the dark, on the side, in some little secret place in your mind.
Step out, acknowledge who we are to you and appreciate us like that. Thank you.
Please help us forward along this active study about non-binary experiences in healthcare.
"I am a medical student at UCSF working on a paid research study on non-binary people and their experiences in healthcare, and I wanted to see if you might be able to help me advertise to your non-binary community at MedPride. I’m happy to answer any questions you might have and have attached the advertisement here for your viewing.
Thank you!

Home But Not Safe, Some LGBTQ Young People Face Rejection From Families in Lockdown For many young people, going to college allows them to finally express their sexual orientation or gender identity. Now with schools closed, many are suffering with families that don't accept them.
It isn't just the United States that discriminates in terms of blood product donation; in fact, the FDA based its new "relaxed" regulations on MSM blood products, from 12 months to 3 months deferment, on other countries doing the same. This isn't evidence-based and this isn't ethical.

Tomorrow is the AMWA/MedPride Ours to Tell Film Screening & Discussion! We will be watching the film at 5:30pm MST and starting the discussion around 5:50pm MST. Feel free to watch the video on your own time and hop into the discussion if that works best for you.
“Ours to Tell” is the story of four people who live full and empowered lives because they had the freedom to access abortion. This film comes as communities of color, LGBTQ people, and many others are increasingly denied access to abortion — and as people across the country face an unprecedented assault on the legal right to access it. “Ours to Tell” shows us the world we could and should have — one where all people are able to access the health care they want, need, and deserve, with compassion and support. Dr. Holly Bullock (OB/GYN) will be joining us to discuss reproductive healthcare and what challenges we face to provide care to our patients during this pandemic.

The FDA has revised its restrictions on blood product donation during this pandemic, but three months deferment is still too long and still too discriminatory.
"Data from the two years following effective implementation of the 12-month donor deferral criteria for MSM comparing the rates of HIV in those donating blood indicate that there has been no increase in risk to the blood supply from the change that was made. Additionally, other countries, including the United Kingdom and Canada have moved to a 3-month deferral period for MSM, and to date, there have been no reports from these countries suggesting safety concerns following the implementation of this change."
Review this full text from the FDA, which states that evidence shows that since switching to 12 month deferment from a lifetime ban, MSM blood has not increased the risk to blood supply:

This type of research empowers medical students to drive necessary, much-needed changes to medical school curriculum. We're excited to form a small team this summer to drive change that gives medical students earlier and more rigorous training so they can give the best possible care to LGBTQIA+ patients. To do that, we utilize important research like this.
Puberty blockers can be 'life-saving' drugs for trans teens, study shows When transgender youths have access to a puberty blocker, their chances of su***de and mental health problems in the immediate term and down the road decline significantly, a new study finds.
Thank y'all for attending our Winter MedPride Social Hour during lunch hour today! It was a blast. Special kudos to Gabi for distributing pronoun stickers and helping us all fit them on our badges. We had a wonderful discussion about ways to improve our medical education at the College of Medicine to better support our LGBTQIA+ patients. We will be sending a survey in the near future to our classes about individual experiences during training to address some concerns that have arisen recently about lack of inclusivity.
Our inbox is always open to the community, so please feel free to message us any time if you have specific concerns that you would like our group to address. We have some exciting events about LGBTQIA+ healthcare planned over the next few months so stay tuned!
Spread the word, a journalism conference scholarship is open! This includes the NLGJA, Association of LGBTQ Journalists Conference in September.
"High school, college and graduate students are welcome to apply. You must be a student at the time of application, but it’s OK if you’re graduating this spring.
We are proud to announce our fifth annual Diversity Scholarship program. ProPublica will be sponsoring need-based scholarships for 20 students to attend an eligible journalism conference in 2020. Anyone who is a permanent U.S. resident is welcome to apply. We especially encourage students from an underrepresented group — including people of color, women, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities — to apply.
The $750 scholarships will go to students who would otherwise be unable to attend. These conferences offer great opportunities for networking and professional development, especially for those just starting out in journalism. Scholarship recipients will also have the opportunity to meet up with any ProPublica staff also in attendance. Check out last year’s scholarship recipients."

"If you don’t know someone’s pronouns, ask!
This is an important skill to cultivate. We have probably all heard this, but there are plenty of times we — all of us, myself included — feel awkward asking, and so we don’t. But it’s never too late — ask at any point during the conversation.
It’s not a faux pas if you have to stop in the middle of a sentence, just ask.
“Sorry, what are your pronouns?”
“Oh I didn’t get your pronouns, what are they?”
“Will you remind me your pronouns please?”"
