When we have the heart to brush off the dirt we will see the gold!

Prada was surrendered to the shelter for attacking chickens. She was actually a second thought pull as the foster went in to see/pull her kennel mate and she didn’t want to leave her alone. She didn’t get any attention at the shelter due to her lovely song “Look at all the other doggies.” (We heard that song at Petsmart too.). Prada, only being a year old when she came in to rescue, hung out with us for a year because sometimes people think that a dog making noise in a kennel makes them a bad dog. Then one day….special people decided to look beyond this behavior and see the super friendly, super loving, bestest girl! Prada has been loving life and fitting in like a glove ever since her new family gave her a chance!
*She did gain some two legged family members as well

If you have stopped by one of our adoption events in the last four years we KNOW that you remember our Sophie. She was always on the end to greet anyone that passed by. Sadly, we have lost our sweet girl and are struggling to adjust. This is a message from her long term foster:

Sophie has been with BARC Humane Society since I started. She sadly was adopted a few times and returned. Four yeas ago she was hit by a car and found on the side of the road because her family allowed her to free roam. After over a month in recovery, no one else stepped up to foster her so she came to us. Sophie was fourteen and a half and had been thru being used as a breeding dog, going thru heartworm treatment twice, and being “rebuilt” after being hit by a car but this gal continued to keep on trucking; spreading joy to everyone. I don’t know rescue without Sophie. At every adoption event she would draw people in to pet her, some sitting by her kennel, but no one ever took her home. Sophie was precious but not a rescue success story. Due to her age and the physical pain from the accident and hard life, Sophie was a grumpy granny with other animals and had to be rotated at my house. She was adored deeply but deserved full time love. I know Sophie was happy, but I wanted more for her and it will always be a failure that I could never find that for her. She had so many physical ailments (thyroid, allergies, enlarged heart, severe arthritis) but never showed that she was slowing down until her last day. In rescue, I have lost so, so many precious creatures but for some reason I thought that this sweetness would literally be around forever and I feel lost.
“Taking any animal into your life will inevitably end in heart ache, but you don’t worry about the hangover when you're at the party"
- Paul O’Grady

Sophie’s medical needs were a big monthly expense for the rescue, she always had a donation jar by her side because she refused to get a job in her retirement, so we would like to ask for help one more time with donations to help care for her. We would like to raise the funds to cover cremation for Sophie so that she can continue to stay with the person that loved her for so many years.
The cost is $300.

This week we lost the founder of our rescue, Charles Devane. He was very active throughout the animal community and a voice for legislation change. He never said no to helping an animal or a collaboration regarding animal welfare. We are grateful to him for being part of developing a rescue community in the Valdosta/Quitman area that has been used to save so many lives. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Being proactive on July 3rd helps prevent being sad on July 5th...protect your pet from getting lost or harming themselves. People and animals have very different perceptions of fireworks.... FIREWORKS ARE SCARY to animals.

Socks was posted about two weeks ago from a TNR community as she wasnt doing well.... well CLEARLY it was because she was supposed to be a companion cat!

This petite gal quickly made herself at home. Her sores are healed, her coat is starting to have a shine and she has a little belly :) Congratulations sweet girl, you will never have to struggle to survive again!

We are always asked if we have any puppies.... so here are some puppies!

These babies are located at the City of Nashville Animal Shelter. They are a very small shelter and are currently very full so now is the perfect time to adopt! If puppies arent your thing then please check out all their adoptable adult dogs.

Please reach out to the shelter for more information. https://www.facebook.com/NashvilleGAAnimalShelter

My name is Trouble but I’m sure that it doesn’t describe me? I am cuddly with a side of “cattitude”, which means I will bring serenity and surprises to your life!! Trouble was in a home but wasn’t allowed to stay because she was stressed. Cats are known to have difficulty initially adjusting to a new environment and need time. Unfortunately, we were unable to intervene in time before Trouble was placed back outside. We are looking for a foster or adopt home that understands that cats need adjustment time and is willing to give Trouble space and love while she learns that she is safe. Trouble is good with most other cats and cat savvy dogs. She will purr when you pick her up and likes to lay around and just touch her person. The life of an outside cat is very short and challenging, and Trouble deserves to be inside to live a long and stress free life!

If interested, please message the page for an application. All animals in the home must be up to date on vaccinations, flea/heartworm prevention and spay/ neuter.

Our sweet Miso is living it up in her furever home! Miso was a foster to adopt placement that was just waiting a week or so on her appointment for a spay to be adopted. A few days after she was placed in the home, she began having rapid breathing and was immediately taken to the vet. Miso had some odd scarring on her lungs and was placed on medication. The family that thought they were taking in a young healthy Golden found themselves monitoring her due to a struggle breathing. Did they say never mind, did they say this isn’t the perfect dog we thought we were getting, did they blame the rescue for not knowing... no... they chose to keep on loving her. After a month or so Miso got better, because love is the true medicine, and she was finally adopted! Just another example of these babies being worth taking a chance on and love being a lifelong commitment.

This is a picture of Coupe in 2017 when we initially had him as a puppy, and a picture of him now at an adoption event. Coupe has been adopted and returned to our rescue three times!! Each and every time it was reported how PERFECT he is but… we are moving, we are having a baby, etc. Coupe has been back with us a year and has had no interest because he is a large, black, bully breed. When people do not understand forever commitment this is the situation that dogs end up in… an older dog STILL looking for a forever home. Coupe is very people, including kid, oriented. He does well with other dogs, although can be noisy when he plays. He isn’t a match for cats. Coupe is a strong boy, and can be a good running partner. He does have sensitive skin and allergies, but who doesn’t in South Georgia. He is on food for sensitive skin and has to be monitored for flare ups.

Our hearts break for Coupe as we see him sitting in the kennel at Petsmart with no prospects, and we ask that you share him so that we can find his true forever home and this horrible cycle of being returned can STOP.

If interested, please message the page for an application.
** All animals in the home must be up to date on vaccinations, flea/ heartworm prevention and spay/neutered.

*** Foster found***
There are tireless warriors out there who do TNR ( trap- neuter- return) which is a huge asset to trying to manage the horrible stray cat population, all over. Well often they trap a cat and have concerns about its return... Socks is their newest concern. This little girl is a year old and only six pounds, she has sores all over her body and her fur condition is thin and unhealthy. All of the other cats in the colony are strong and healthy, which means Socks isn't thriving. Socks was checked out medically and everything seems well, which means she "isn't built" for the stray life. We are desperate to prevent Socks from being returned because everything indicates she will most likely not survive much longer. Socks is super friendly and has the potential to be a healthy gorgeous girl but only if a home is found. The unfortunate part of TNR is they have to be returned, which Socks will after she heals from her recent spay. So we are on a time crunch.... is there a family that will give this beauty a chance?

Cats are often misunderstood and not seen as being a wonderful companion like dogs, which sadly results in a lower adoption rate for cats. It is true that cats are different, but they are very much so cuddle bugs and best friends. So when our super snuggly Nancy did exhibit some of the stereotypical kitty drama traits, people didnt want to believe the snuggly part! UNTIL... Nancy found a momma that had a history of being patient with furbabies that needed extra time to adjust and because of that special characteristic, our Nancy final found her furever home after two years!!! We will miss your quirky personality sweet girl but are so happy for you!

We are trying to help find fosters for babies who have never had a home.

These guys have been removed from a neglectful situation and although have taken their first step to a better life, the shelter is overcrowded and scary. Sadly, there were so many dogs that came in at once, the shelter is overcrowded now. They have to move some dogs out, but these aren't yet ready for adoption. Please consider fostering them to help clear out kennels and save lives.

**Must live near the Valdosta area.
*** All medical expenses covered
** All dog friendly, can be cat tested as needed
** These dogs are not with BARC Humane Society, message us for details.

Well he started day one testing his mommy with his anxiety, but she saw all his love and potential and helped him turn into the best boy! He was worth the craziness!! Happy life buddy!

Bailey Bee LOVES people and melts anytime someone touches her.

Bailey Bee is a 2 year old Boxer/Bully mix. Bailey does well with other dogs, even multiple dogs. She might be a better fit for a dog around her size or bigger because she doesn’t realize her size and is sometimes rough with smaller dogs. Bailey Bee isn’t a match for cats. Bailey Bee is still a puppy and is working on fine-tuning her house skills (crate and house training) and leash walking but with consistency should do well. Bailey Bee is a people pleaser and already knows sit, so she should do well in learning commands quickly. She has a permanent grumpy face but a permanent energy of joy.

Grayson is ready to find his forever home!!!

Grayson is an eleven year old Pekingese who came into our care due to his parents’ declining health. Grayson is a super friendly and lovable guy to everyone that he meets. He would do best in a home by himself or another dog who doesn’t do the “I love you, you love me” dance with another dog. He doesn’t like others in his bubble. Grayson is used to being an only baby and he stands by the statement “I’m too old for this sh*@” when it comes to making doggie friends. No cats for Grayson, because he will just chase them and throw out a hip. Overall Grayson is a healthy boy but does have chronic allergies and is on a month allergy shot. Due to years of skin issues from these allergies, Grayson will probably never grow back that long Pekingese fur, but he will forever be the absolute cutest gremlin with a Mohawk.

If interested, please message the page for an application. Due to age and medical needs, must provide a vet reference.

We have been waiting on this picture for TWO YEARS...Noodles in a home of her own!!
Noodles was trapped as part of a plan to clear out an area near a business. It was noticed by one of our volunteers that she was pregnant and they offered to foster. She had three kitties in our care and then just sat, waiting. For Noodles to have her best life she needed to be an only cat, she was an adult, and she displayed some cattitude; not a cream of the crop combo. Sadly, she really was the cat's meow but no one wanted to give her a chance to shine. Noodle is lovable, playful, talkative, quirky gal and that is what her new mom and dad chose to see! Happy tails sweet girl!!!!
