My July life outside of work reminder: in order to live the life you want, you must live the life you wish for.

BE•DO•HAVE theory…. Have you heard of it?

Well, a lot of times we get it twisted. But the theory goes- you must BE the person you want, in order to DO the things you want, and HAVE the life you wish for. Not any other combo of those 3. You can’t wait to have the things you want, then do the things you aspire, and decide that THAT is when you can be the person you dream of. First, you have to be the person you desire showing up as. Just be her! Everything else falls into place. Period.

July, I did just that. Sometimes being that person was was easy, sometimes it was very challenging. For the next 5 months I intend on inspiring others to BE•DO•HAVE, whatever that looks like for you. Don’t be afraid to wake up tomorrow and ✨BE✨

A moment for the hair ✨

Summertime can be slow for the hair industry but as an extension stylists who specializes in getting pageant contestants, from all over Georgia, ready for major competitions all summer… it’s my time to shine honeyyyyy!

These ladies seek out the best of the best. It’s been my honor to be highly regarded in their circles! These ladies invest into this sport and the stakes are high. There is a difference in needing their hair to be “stage and print ready” vs everyday wear for color and extensions. We work together with their teams to make sure they’re the full package.

The journey from pink hair to pink tops

Sometimes you just gotta live a little and try the fun thing. So many of my clients get bold and do a big hair gut before getting new extensions. But in true Alexa fashion, she wanted to try short and pink before new hair! It was a journey getting there and a journey going back to long + blonde after!

Removing the pink tones left us with strong yellow undertones to work out while minding the integrity of the hair. COLOR THEORY 101 + high quality products helped us get there smoothly🚥

I started working on MA’s hair health at least 4 years ago in prep for her modeling + pageant dream hair. It’s come a long way. We’ve gone dark, we’ve gone light. And now, we’re somewhere in the middle ✨We finally installed weft + Ktip extension last fall. We knew we wanted to have her hair spot on for this season on the big stage so… I consider that install a practice run compared to this one!

I adore my pageant girls! But the pressure is on for their hair when it comes time for pageant week. There is an entire team behind most of these ladies prepping them for a full package showcase. Dialing in the color, tonality, length, density, versatility- and knowing it’s going to be judged is a pressure I obsessed with if im being honest. It needs to shine on that stage and pull their wardrobe + makeup together.

A fairly odd couple, but we make it work so well!

Teaching, coaching, mentoring has always been such a passion of mine. So when our receptionist decided to attend cosmetology school while finishing her college degree (ok hustler!) #, we offered her a position as an apprentice at our salon.

Georgia offers an apprenticeship program as an alternative to going to beauty school to obtain your licensing. Hands-on-training meets cosmo school 🤝

While she is our very first apprentice, Hannah is my third assistant! .the.hairstylist works full time in my team and worked on our team until she relocated to her home time and is now a salon owner! I’ve been so blessed to be a part of these talented, young business women’s careers! I have had the privilege of watching them fly on their own after their time with me transitioned on to the next step.

I’ve learned a lot in the past 6 or so years of working with an assistant. My opinion is this position is training to excel in this industry, not just work beneath a senior stylist forever. For this reason, when I work with Hannah I’m training her to be more of a co-stylist than an assistant. She brings a lot to the table for my business including efficiency when we work together. In addition to that is her… ✋🏼entertainment value 🤚🏼. For as different in so many ways as we are, it really brings a great balance to what I do behind the chair!

Teaching old school values and tricks to the younger generation of hairstylists is something I will never tire of! Gaining wisdom and perspective from them is critical for my growth as an elder stylist 💅🏻

For me, the best part about is how many friendships I’ve made with talented, hardworking, and inspiring hairstylists from all over the world. These relationships are monumental in our industry for growth behind the chair AND as humans!

The stylists Ive personally connected with are some of the most genuinely inspirational people I know. We hype each other up, educate one another, authentically interact with each other year after year, and celebrate each other in big ways. And not just during award season! That’s just when we really come together in full force.

The #1 reason I do not understand why extension stylists would sign up to *only* offer one method/ideology of extension is because there are amazing clients who don’t fit in a one size fits all box!

In fact, if I only offered handtied or sew in wefts, a huge number of my clients would not be able to have their dream hair done.

All extension methods have their pros and cons. All types of extensions can and do cause damage if not properly installed, on the ideal client, and/or not cared for at home. That’s a fact! But there’s a reason why different methods fit a different client’s needs better, and in some cases reduce any risk of complications.

In the case of my pictured client, keratin bond tips allow me to fill in her sparse hair from the ear forward. It also allows us to have the high-dimensional color look we wanted with a predictable color outcome. Very low maintenance, high impact, and fully customizable placement. Hand-picked colors in the perfect placement for the ✨wow✨ factor we needed! In this case- a weft install would never offer us that!

Don’t put baby in the corner! Sometimes being an extension specialist means understanding from experience why you WOULD choose one method or type vs why you’ve been told not to.

Taking a relaxing bath after a very long day behind the chair and decided to post one of my face shots from this year so far! It would seem as though my job is also my hobby…

Something I wasn’t taught in beauty school;

✨Low volume developer (I’m talking 6, 7, 12 volume) with bleach lightener will eventually lift to the exact same blonde as 40 volume with lightener.✨

I was taught that you started everyone off with 20 and bumped it up from there depending on how dark the hair was. So a level 5 would probably use 40 volume to get blonde. A level 7 would use 30, a level 9 would get 20. Whew that was wildly inaccurate! I no longer use over 30 volume, even on my darkest clients. My experience is, I do not have to!

I love to lift low and slow. I use 7-12 volume developer for most of my blending services and I like a 30 grams lightener to 60 grams developer consistency.

⚡️Processing Time + Product Connsistency + Proper Saturation= LIFT⚡️
…PERIOD…

Allowing the lightener to lift slowly without heat creates a much more desirable raw lift that has a healthier life span! Because I’m not blowing out the cuticle at a rapid pace, the hair is also able to maintain a gloss or toner for longer because the internal integrity is not completely compromised during the lightening process.

I could have sworn there wasn’t going to be daylight savings time anymore! Since I was obviously mistaken, heres me trying to make the best of the shorter, darker days when going longer + darker with hair.

Big changes for the spring. Who else is ready for longer days + longer hair like I am?!

You can’t change the cards you were dealt, just change the way you play the hand 🃏

To me, extensions are hair enhancements. A way to change how the hand is played, if you will. I look at them as a way to take what you have, identify the problem areas, and enhance your natural hair so the overall effect is exactly what you want.

For this reason, the health of the natural hair and scalp is *always* a top priority to me as a stylist! Integrity based installs + color services is the ace in the hole for longterm success as an extension specialist!

1-2 rows of extensions for bobs is a game changer for ladies with fine natural hair.

As much as it makes a huge impact on the fullness, this cut requires diligent cutting skills! It shows any imperfection. Slow and steady cutting, building the shape, using the correct tools to allow for a natural fall + movement. There’s very little room for error! It’s one of my favorite challenges as a hair extention expert✨

Breaking up is hard to do! Social media makes it easier.

The amount of clients who have told me they’ve stayed in an unhappy relationship with their stylist out of guilt or a sense of obligation, is incredible. Incredible because the relationships we form with service providers in the beauty industry is so strong. But also incredible because paying for services that you’re completely unhappy with, for years and years, is unhealthy!

The ability to see what else is out there on social media has changed the way our industry thinks about how we do business. It allows stylists to attract the type of clients they enjoy best. It also allows clients to find a stylist who offers them not only the hair service they desire, but also the type of environment they feel just comfortable in! ✨ WIN WIN ✨

If you want to win as a service provider on social media, start posting about the services you want more of. Post about the salon environment you provide. Post about what the overall experience is you do that no one else can offer. Little details matter. Don’t fall into the trap of what anyone else is doing and why. Advertise to the world about you doing YOUR services in the way you do them. This is marketing towards your dream clients who are looking for a reason to choose you and what you do best!
