“ ‘When we lose our fear, they lose their power.’

Minneapolis Uprising anniversary, Day 1. This day in 2020, people gathered at the site of George Floyd's murder by MPD. Primed by the pandemic for radical community care and not led by the usual orgs or nonprofits, a spontaneous march to the 3rd precinct followed. Sparks flew, "peace police" were put to the side, and the siege of the precinct was on.

We'll always be proud of how people in our city lost their fear and for a few days, police lost their power.”

“I saw a video a month or so ago of these children in a refugee camp in Gaza holding up signs begging people to see them as people. I’m shocked that that’s still an ask, truly.

I’ve been working on carving this block since then. It’s incomplete. It’s hard to complete.

I’m seeing more and more people speaking out, which is great, but for those who still refuse…I don’t even know what to say- there’s nothing that will change their minds, and I’m honestly glad they’re so identifiable. It’s a beacon that whispers “stay away.”

Engaging and scrolling through social media feels really hard - there’s so much going on and it feels like there’s too much pain to absorb. I’ve been trying to reframe it as the pain of the birth of something new and hopeful instead of the anguish it feels like.

Keep shouting everyone.”

Slide 1: “Dressed In Paradise”
16”x20” acrylic on canvas, 2021

“This piece is an invitation to give myself permission to explore my gender as fluid. It is a reminder that both my masculine and femme energy are what make me powerful. I hope that this also serves as an invitation for others to do the same and to challenge the social constructs of gender as binary.”

“Do you think joy is more powerful than hate?...

I think one of the most important things we can do as q***r people and activists is to feel joy. Feeling joy for who you are in a world that tells you it’s wrong is one of the many ways to fight back. Seeing joy is also so important for other people in the community, and for q***r youth who might be scared. It’s important for them to know that q***rness can be, and is, celebrated!!

I think joy will always be more powerful than hate! Remember q***r joy is resistance! 🌈”

“As Pride month begins, I reflect on the times in which I had naively thought that representation solely created any form of lasting liberation. The older I get though, the more I ground in that not being the case.

It can feel tough as a Q***r Non-Binary freelance artist not to participate in contributing to corporate pride. There are times where I’ve molded Pride campaigns to be something more intentional, which have been truly amazing experiences for me as an artist and then there’s been other times where I’ve been used by organizations, that would stifle my creative freedom, not have my basic access needs as a Disabled person met or censoring free speech for the sake of overall corporate palatability.

I don’t wish to perform the emotional labor of explaining to corporations how to do things or reminding others of my pronouns when I’m misgendered. I receive emails from companies asking me to do free work for their Pride campaigns in exchange for “exposure.” I see organizations and corporations wanting to just do the bare minimum to look like allies.

As we continue to witness veils lifting in our world, don’t let the world make you forget that Pride started as a riot.

Pride is rooted in resistance.”

“Juneteenth is a day of celebration, but also a time to take a deep look at our violent past and the systems that continue to uphold racial injustice. We still have so much to fight for!

Federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday.”
