Introducing Guernsey’s hydrophobic coating.

Shown in this video is a 6” substrate coated with GCL’s (M14) silver. Half of the surface is coated with a secondary hydrophobic coating visibly beading up and repelling water droplets.

Adding our hydrophobic coating to most of GCL’s thin-films, including metallics and AR coatings, will assist in protecting the coated surface from debris and repel water without compromising optical performance.

Hydrophobic coatings can be applied to most coatings on glass, metals and plastic substrates.

Shown in this video is a 3” silver coated substrate attached to an abrasion test apparatus. The demonstration was conducted over a three day period of time at Photonics West 2019 (Booth #3103). During the show, almost 4,000 rotations were made depicting the durability of Guernsey’s silver (M14) using MIL specifications for moderate abrasion (applying 1 to 1-1/2 pounds of pressure through cheesecloth pad 3/8” in diameter).

The MIL test specifies 50 passes. During the course of three days, the silver coated optic was put through almost 80 tests. The surface of the optic was not cleaned allowing ambient dust to settle on the part and dragging added contaminants across the surface. The coating was torture tested and does not end up pristine at the end of three days, however, the damage is extremely minor.

M51 - The Whirlpool Galaxy. This is an image of two galaxies colliding in the Northern Sky in the little constellation Canes Venatici. They are doing a slow dance and you can see the faint hint of the huge tidal tail caused by the collision, which is a happening over a huge timescale for us mere humans. This is directly overhead at the moment, and I managed to capture this after a day out at Wembley for an FA cup semi-final, so I was not in my finest form by the time I set this up, as can probably be gathered by the data info below. This object is anywhere between 15 and 30 million light years away.

Astronomers using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope have, for the first time, spotted four images of a distant exploding star. The images are arranged in a cross-shaped pattern by the powerful gravity of a foreground galaxy embedded in a massive cluster of galaxies. The supernova discovery paper will appear on 6 March 2015 in a special issue of Science celebrating the centenary of Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity.

Exploded Star Blooms Like a Cosmic Flower | ChandraBlog | Fresh Chandra News Because the debris fields of exploded stars, known as supernova remnants, are very hot, energetic, and glow brightly in X-ray light, NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has proven to be a valuable tool in studying them. The supernova remnant called G299.2-2.9 (or G299 for short) is located within our M…

NASA Just Released a Seriously Jaw-Dropping Image of the Pillars of Creation 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope.
