Veterans Home of California - Ventura
The Veterans Home of California–Ventura is a 60-bed Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE) Highway 101.
The Veterans Home of California–Ventura is located near the gleaming California Pacific Ocean coastline, about an hour’s drive northwest of Los Angeles, 35 miles south of Santa Barbara and a few short minutes off U.S. Ventura is situated between the Ventura River and the Santa Clara River, with soil so fertile that citrus trees grow better in Ventura than anywhere else in the state. Today, June 6, 2024, marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
We honor the heroism and sacrifices of all those who served as part of the 1944 invasion of Normandy, which laid the foundation for Allied victory on the Western Front in World War II.
On this Memorial Day, we honor those who made the supreme sacrifice in service to our nation. We remember the fallen by supporting the living veterans with whom they served and fought alongside as comrades, brothers, and sisters in arms.
In accordance with the U.S. National Moment of Remembrance resolution, which was passed in 2000, pause from whatever you are doing at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to provide freedom to all.
There often is confusion about the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day, which is celebrated on the last Monday in May, honors those U.S. servicemembers who have died in military service to the nation. Veterans Day, which falls on November 11, honors the millions of men and women who have served in the U.S. military.
Our Home is a haven for butterflies!
Our Home’s Master Gardener demonstration gardens not only delight our residents and staff, but also serve as a supportive habitat for California Monarch butterflies and other insects. Volunteer Marilyn Whitford, a Ventura County Master Gardener, helps lead the work at the Home.
The Home’s pollinator gardens were initially started by Whitford and other volunteers in 2021-22. Since that time the Master Gardeners have been making continual improvements. The garden has been supported the past few years by Xerces Society Habitat Kit grants, which help fund improvements. Whitford is also using the Home’s garden as part of her work as a citizen scientist with the Western Monarch Genomics Project. She recently made a presentation on the Home’s gardens at Monarch & Pollinator Regional Advisory Committee.
We appreciate the hard work of Whitford and all the Master Gardeners. Thank you for bringing us joy – and helping butterflies!

As Black History Month begins, CalVet honors the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, nicknamed the "Six Triple Eight." With their motto of “No mail, low morale,” the predominantly Black battalion of the Women's Army Corps (WAC) went overseas during World War II to clear a massive backlog of mail for soldiers. On March 14, 2022, President Biden signed a bipartisan bill to award the battalion the Congressional Gold Medal.
