Plant of the week: Monardella macrantha 'Marian Sampson' โค
This GORGEOUS perennial herb is a horticultural selection of Coyote Mint. It's growth is prostrate and it can be used as a ground cover. It's a great addition to rock gardens, can be used for borders, it's spectacular in containers, and is especially wonderful for butterfly and bird gardens as it attracts hummingbirds and butterflies๐ฆ
This variety of Monardella is evergreen and loves fast draining soil, full sun/part shade๐ฅ and grows only 1' tall and up to 2' wide. Watering needs are low to moderate.๐ฆ
Monardella is part of the mint family and has a beautiful scent!
Our Monardella's are blooming NOW and ready for your garden! Stop by the nursery from 8 AM - 2 PM to visit us and grab on of these beautiful plants, hope to see you at the nursery!๐ฟ
Happy Summer Solstice! โ๏ธ Often considered the "First Day of Summer" (who are we kidding, it's been hot for weeks), the summer solstice marks the longest day of the year (and shortest night) in the Northern Hemisphere! ๐โ๏ธ Going forward, we will be losing a few minutes of daylight every day until the winter solstice, when the process reverses again. ๐
Even though we have reached the longest day, we know we've got a few more months of hot weather before Autumn. When you're visiting our preserves, please take the proper precautions to prevent any dangerous situations - for yourselves or for the preserves!
๐ฅต The days can be hot! Make sure to drink lots of water before, during, and after spending time outside! If you are feeling the effects of the sun (headache, fatigue, thirst, irritability, or more) - rest in the shade immediately!๐ก๏ธ
๐ณ Take advantage of the shade! Temperatures under a tree can be many degrees lower than directly under the sun
๐โ๐ฆบ Watch out for your pets! Our furry friends can't tell us when their paws are burning or if they are overheating. Make sure they have lots of water, and check the ground to see if it's too hot. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws. And remember - never leave them in a hot car with no air! ๐
๐ฅ Our preserves are extra susceptible to fire during these months. Please refrain from smoking, cooking, or even parking on dry grass during the next few months. (Reminder - we never encourage smoking at our preserves) ๐ญ
Kaweah Oaks Preserve and Dry Creek Preserve are open every day, sunrise to sunset, and McCarthy Blue Oak Ranch Preserve is open on weekends only, sunrise to sunset. Hope to see you at the preserves! ๐ฑ
Summer EARTH Academy has been a blast!! ๐โ๏ธ We spent a week at Kaweah Oaks Preserve and another at Dry Creek (and Homer Ranch) exploring the preserves and learning about the local flora and fauna, natural and human history of the area, and getting a better understanding of our local watersheds! ๐ฑ๐๏ธ
๐บ๏ธ From piecing together maps of the watershed, to using an enviroscape to better understand human impacts, to exploring the creeks and ponds at the preserve, our EARTH Technicians used a variety of tools to improve their knowledge about the local area. ๐๐ฌ๐ฆ ๐
๐จ๐๏ธ We also had chances to reflect through nature journaling, get creative through collecting, making, and using our own natural dyes, and recreate and relax at Sequoia Lake! ๐ฃ๐ฅพ Thanks to the EPA for their generous funding to allow us to run this amazing summer program this year! ๐๐
๐ค If you want to get involved - it's not too late! We will have one more week of Summer EARTH Academy at our McCarthy Blue Oak Ranch Preserve in Springville! Sign up now - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeDInXMRgumCcGrWFQ0laHgBNOugRDGDly8Ip_JGj2XI0iAhQ/viewform

๐ Ever wonder what our biologists do in the Carrizo Plains? Some of our staff, AmeriCorps members, and volunteers went on an overnight trip to find out! (Part 2: nighttime)๐
๐ญ After vegetation monitoring all day, we switched to overnight monitoring of Giant Kangaroo Rats (GKR). We set traps in a grid formation, and were lucky enough to catch 3 GKR and 3 pocket mice! ๐ Before we set them free, we made sure to collect important data like head size, s*x, weight, and information such as the presence of mites or babies. ๐
Catch and release monitoring of these endangered species can help us better understand the status, health, and spread of the population, what factors can impact the population range and health, and if the management techniques to improve habitat are helping! ๐ฑ๐พ
We also went "spotlighting" for other animals in the region! ๐ฆ This essentially means we drove around with high-powered spotlights, trying to find and identify various nocturnal animals that are also protected (such as the San Joaquin Kit Fox). Though we didn't see any, we know they're out there! ๐ง
๐ Ever wonder what our biologists do in the Carrizo Plain? (Part 1)
Some of our staff, AmeriCorps members, and volunteers went on an overnight trip to find out! โ We had a blast working with the biologists to conducting a variety of biological surveys in the field, all of which will help us better manage the land to improve habitat for endangered species! ๐๐ป
During the days, we conducted vegetation surveys on some plots that would be burned through a partnership with CalFire to manage invasive plants in the area. ๐ฉ๐Conducting vegetation surveys helps us understand species count and distribution, and helps us monitor for recovery after large disturbances like a controlled burn. ๐ฑ
๐ป We found a variety of plant species, many of which we did not know were there from a quick glance at the land. Thanks to all the help from our volunteers and AmeriCorps members, we were able to get all the plots surveyed within 2 days (which would have taken our biologists three times as long to finish by themselves)! Thank you to all of our help! ๐ช
And stay tuned for Part 2 (nighttime field work!)
Please be advised that Homer Ranch Preserve will be closed to the public from June 1 to November 1 due to the heightened risk of wildfires during the fire season. This closure is in place to ensure the safety of our visitors, staff, and the natural environment.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this period. Please plan your visits accordingly and consider exploring our other preserves, Kaweah Oaks, Dry Creek, & Blue Oak Ranch Preserve, that are accessible during this time.
โ Got summer plans?? โ
School's out and it's time to look forward to what you're going to do over summer break! ๐ If you're a high school student (or if you just finished 8th grade or graduated high school), consider joining us for our summer EARTH Academy Program! ๐ฑWe will be running three weeks of fun activities at our nature preserves, learning about the local environment, history, and doing some hands-on exploration outside! ๐
๐ณ Each week, we will spend three days at the preserve (Tuesday-Thursday), followed by a trip to Sequoia Lake on Friday to learn about mountain ecosystems and spend a day on the lake! ๐
๐ฆ Week 1 - Kaweah Oaks Preserve
๐ฆ Week 2 - Dry Creek Preserve
๐ฆ Week 3 - Blue Oak Ranch Preserve
You will need to provide your own transportation to each day. ๐ However, the whole program is completely free, thanks to support from the Environmental Protection Agency!! ๐

We love to Celebrate!
This past weekend, visitors at Dry Creek Preserve enjoyed a beautiful day in nature, celebrating a graduation. We found confetti scattered throughout the property when we closed the gates that night. While we love having people celebrate in our preserves, the pictures don't capture the full impact of confetti blown into the nursery, the parking lot, and off the preserve. The cleanup efforts made by our staff and volunteers were extensive, but they were still unable to remove all the tiny bits of confetti.
We urge everyone to follow the "Leave No Trace" principles when visiting our preserves. It's crucial to ensure that we leave these natural spaces as pristine as we found them, allowing everyone to continue enjoying their beauty. ๐ฟ๐ป
We had a fantastic fieldtrip at the Dry Creek Nursery! ๐ฑ๐ป The Plant Production class at Woodlake High School joined us on Monday for a short hike and exploration of the creek before we got to work planting seedlings, propagating cuttings, and sowing seeds! ๐ณโ๏ธ The students learned about native plants and their benefits, how to grow plants from different stages, and even how to custom mix soil to meet the needs of each individual plant! Thanks to the hard work of their teacher, they already had the skills needed to get this work done, and jumped right in! ๐ช
๐ท๐ผ Together, they helped us add nearly 200 new plants of nine different species to our inventory! ๐ฎ We are so thankful for their hard work and enthusiasm. The whole day was a blast! We hope they come back out soon ๐๐
