Fern Chertok, Interim Director of Hornstein shares how the Hornstein faculty selected Alan for this prestigious award, "This past February, during our Myra Kraft Seminar in Israel, Hornstein students and faculty had the opportunity to meet with Alan Gill and hear his thoughts on the critical elements of effective Jewish leadership during times of crisis. We were riveted by his insightful understanding of the role of leaders in difficult times and by the breadth of his experiences in supporting Jewish communities around the world. Alan exemplifies the professional integrity and compassion as well as the visionary leadership that characterized Bernard Reisman."
Alan Gill served as CEO of JDC from 2013-2017 before retiring from full-time service and returning home to Israel, capping a 23-year tenure with the organization. Alan played a leadership role in launching many of JDC’s landmark programs around the world.

In 2015, he oversaw JDC’s rescue operation of 130 Jews trapped in the war zone in eastern Ukraine and who were brought to safety in the western part of the country.
In addition to serving as CEO Emeritus of JDC, Alan is advisor-in-residence with the Mandel Institute for Executive Leadership in North America and serves as senior advisor at the Jewish Institute for Liberal Values. He sits on the Boards of Directors of the Taub Center for Social Policy Studies in Israel and the Academic College of Tel Aviv-Jaffa.

While receiving her PhD in Political Science at the Hebrew University, Liora launched the first academic Master’s program in community development studies, the Glocal Program, at the Hebrew University in 2011.

Since departing Brandeis in 2018, Liora has worked with–and consulted for–a diverse subset of mission-driven organizations in the areas of health equity, immigrant justice, and college access and readiness. Her diverse experience drives her passion for developing equitable, inclusive, intergenerational, and accessible community learning and engagement programming, alongside working to empower students at different stages of their academic and professional careers as leaders and changemakers. To this end, she is also an adjunct lecturer at Regis College where she teaches a Master’s class on grant writing and project management.

Teens need a new space to meet this moment, and we can help As the war with Hamas continues to unfold, teens need social settings — online and IRL — where they can debrief with peers and have hard conversations in a supportive environment.
Dear Hornstein Community,
It is almost impossible to believe, but only eight months ago, the Hornstein program was visiting S'derot as part of the Myra Kraft Seminar in Israel. Now we are watching what can only be described as a modern “pogrom” in that same town and all over the surrounding areas of Israel. We are devastated, terrified, angry, and resolute in our support of Israel.
How do we, members of the worldwide Jewish people, support our communities and move beyond this moment? If we are fortunate, we have leaders who can lend us their strength, show us by their example how to act on our shared convictions and remind us of our individual and collective resilience. Leaders like those educated and those currently being educated by the Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program.
I started today, struggling to find the words to express what I was feeling Then, Alex S., one of our current Hornstein students shared the following message and I realized that the most fitting words are those of the next generation of Jewish leaders. Alex wrote…
As students in the Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program, we stand at the forefront of a pivotal moment in history—a moment that underscores our unwavering commitment to Israel and the worldwide Jewish community. Our journey isn't solely about preparing future leaders; we are those leaders, shaped by our experiences and convictions.
The recent events unfolding in Israel, marked by relentless attacks from Hamas, deeply touch our hearts and reaffirm our purpose. In these challenging times, we recognize the significance of our role as emerging Jewish leaders, tasked with navigating the ever-evolving landscape of the Jewish community and advocating passionately for Israel's well-being and security.
In the 21st century, leadership goes beyond skill sets; it embodies a profound connection to Israel's enduring story. We embrace this responsibility with fierce determination.
In these moments of adversity, our hearts beat in solidarity with Israel, as we extend our unwavering support to its resilient people. In the face of adversity, our duty remains resolute—to uphold the values and principles that guide us, to rise together as the present and future Jewish leaders, and to forge a brighter, more secure future for Israel and the entire Jewish family.
In the last few days, Hornstein has reached out individually with all of our alumni who reside in Israel to reaffirm our support. If you did not hear from me, (or you know of other Alumni who did not hear from me) it is because we do not have a current email address. Please let us know how we can contact you or others going forward.
Current Hornstein students and faculty will be meeting this week to navigate our own reactions and to plan how we can act to support Israel and our local Jewish communities.
We are united in our prayers for the safety of Israel and its people.
