โMy dad Richard Baltz graduated from Bentley in 1932 โ a tumultuous time, but his Bentley degree helped him find work. He would turn to that credential over and over in his life,โ says Mary Baltz Curran, reflecting on her dadโs legacy. โDadโs time at Bentley also helped him find his true passion โ understanding and investing in company stocks. As someone with so many interests and talents, I know he would have loved being a student at Bentley today. This Fatherโs Day, I am so proud to give back to the place that helped make my father who he was.โ
Eval โ99 and LaTisha (Stewart) โ99 Silvera launched their brewery Brockton Beer Company three years ago with a diverse group of friends, and on any given day, their brewpub might be playing R&B, โ80s pop or Cape Verdean music. โOur founding team is Jamaican, Irish, Trinidadian, Mexican, Filipino,โ says LaTisha. โWe want anyone when they enter our taproom to breathe, relax and feel included, regardless of their professional and cultural backgrounds.โ
The craft brewing industry embraced them from the beginning, they said; those who were established in the field were excited to help get a more diverse operation off the ground in an industry that is overwhelmingly white. Among those offering assistance was Trillium Brewing Company owner Esther (Rothstein) Tetreault โ99, MBA โ03, who shared startup stories and lessons learned and helped them procure brewing equipment.
Furthering the sense of community, the brewery has spearheaded the Culture on Tap festival, bringing visiting breweries from all over Massachusetts together with diverse assortments of local restaurants and musicians. โFor those from outside who might not know Brockton, we want to show you what itโs all about,โ Eval says. โAnd that weโre proud of it.โ
Promoting mental health and well-being isnโt just the right thing to do. It helps your companyโs bottom line. So as a manager or executive, how can you help make your team happier (and more productive, too)? For Bentley Magazine, Susan Vroman, senior lecturer in Management, offers five tips.
1. Get to know your employees as humans.
In nearly every job, we interact and work with other people, so why donโt we remember weโre all, well, human? We all have some need for belonging. When managers make an effort to learn about their employees โ what excites or interests them and even what they donโt like โ it shows they are valued. When employees feel respected and validated, they do better work. Itโs that simple.
2. Promote friendships.
What keeps people in their jobs? Research shows that workplace friendships not only encourage trust among employees, they enhance creativity. However you do it โ staff meetings, training seminars, holiday parties โ bringing people together strengthens relationships among workers. That makes them happier, more creative and more productive.
3. Empower your staff.
To do your best work, you canโt be afraid to fail. Anyone who knows the story of Thomas Edison understands the value of trying unsuccessfully (many times) before you succeed. So why is it so hard for many managers to let their workers try? For workers to feel empowered, they must be given permission to take risks and โ if they fail โ to learn from their mistakes in a safe environment. Leaders should delegate both tasks and authority to their employees. And donโt forget to provide training opportunities so that when you delegate a project, theyโre ready.
4. Give context for the work.
Being asked to complete a task, role or job is one thing. Understanding the impact it will have is quite another. Be transparent with your staff and explain why you are asking them to take on a project โ how it matters in the โbig picture.โ Providing this full context for the work that employees do gives them both a reason to do it and a motivation to do it well.
5. In the office or remote? Choose which makes sense for your team.
Itโs hard to know how and where people work best. While some companies mandate a return to the office, others say remote or hybrid work is here to stay. When possible, leaders should assess which parts of work must be done in an office โ and why โ before mandating changes based on what other organizations are doing. Look at each role and team on a case-by-case basis to determine if flex space and/or flex time is appropriate.

There was always a little voice telling me, โIf I donโt give up, what would my future be like then? If I give up now, the future I dream about will all be nothing.โโEvery time when Iโm razor-thin from giving up, this little voice always pulls me back to the right track.

Iโve been talking to PhDs, entrepreneurs and professionals in this industry. Also reading books and making new contacts in biotech. Iโm a firm believer that all obstacles dissolve in the face of human will. Although breaking into such a different industry is certainly not easy, Iโll keeping knocking on new doors until my goals become a reality.

Some of Sean Rotermund's best Bentley memories are of building a powerhouse men's lacrosse program โ its first year as a varsity program was his first year at Bentley. The prospect of the team getting closer to that dominance in recent years โ making the NCAA tournament in the 2023 and 2024 seasons โ is a big part of why Rotermund '96 gives back.
Cradling the Community Sean Rotermund โ96 scores big with a gift to the Bentley lacrosse team.
