The Mary Elizabeth House Inc.
For more than a decade, The Mary Elizabeth House has been transforming lives of young, single women and their families.
The young women we serve are either single mothers or pregnant and are currently in or have aged-out of the foster care system. All have experienced trauma, family disruptions, instability and a host of other challenges that have substantially impacted their lives. These challenges place the young women, and their children, at-risk of living impoverished lives, with the potential for a second gene

Aging out of the foster care system seems especially problematic for young women and those with children. Of youth reaching 18, 20% in foster care will instantly become homeless, and only 1 out of every two who age out will have some form of gainful employment by the age of 24. That is why The Mary Elizabeth House is committed to working intensely with these young mothers to ensure they develop the skills necessary to take control over their lives and care for and protect their children.
More than half of families with low incomes reported not receiving support from some of the most common safety net programs. That is why we are so committed to providing resources and educational services to help break the cycle of poverty and give young mothers and families the fair chance to flourish.

Did you know, single mothers are more likely to have low income households than single fathers? This is just one of many challenges faced by the young women we serve at the MEH. Having aged out of the foster care system, our young mothers experience many obstacles that make it difficult for them to thrive.
That is why we are committed to providing services such as family support, residential housing, life-skills training, parenting, and counseling services to improve their lives and advance future generations to come. Consider donating today, as we continue to of generational poverty.

Another great way we strive to end generational poverty is through support services. Last year, 24 young mothers participated in 528 case management sessions designed to help them achieve economic mobility.
Supporting diverse and historically marginalized families is very important to us as we continue to fight generational poverty and empower those who have been challenged in ways that make it difficult for them to thrive.
The team at Mary Elizabeth House supports young mothers and their children every step of the way to break the cycle of generational poverty. This includes providing them with classes that focus on budgeting, health and awareness, and interpersonal skills so they have the proper education and life skills to succeed and flourish.
The programs we provide at The Mary Elizabeth House deliver parenting and life-skills training, individualized counseling and an early childhood development program. Collectively, these essential programs align with our mission of supporting and strengthening individuals and families.
Did you know that young single mothers experience poverty at higher rates in communities across the country? According to a report from the Brookings Institution women of color, especially, find themselves trapped in cyclical poverty that spans at least two generations.
