Our goal is to teach 1-6 graders to Develop & Use Critical Comprehension to identify extremism online
Developing and Using Critical Comprehension (DUCC) was founded to teach students in grades 1-6 about digital literacy and critical comprehension skills to foster independent thinking in a non-politicized manner. We believe in early-childhood intervention to improve critical literacy abilities. Since students are being introduced to the internet at a much younger age, they need to be educated on th
Last week, D.U.C.C. attended the Eradicate Hate Global Summit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We had the opportunity to connect with top experts from around the world and to sit on a panel examining innovations to fight extremism.
During the panel, we screened our award-winning animation "Daniel's First Day", and discussed D.U.C.C., the power of student-designed preventions, & what anti-extremism professionals can bring to the prevention space.
It was an honor to attend the summit & talk about D.U.C.C.'s plan to change the world!
Earlier this month, we started working with the Polarization & Extremism Research & Innovation Lab (PERIL) at American University and we have some exciting projects in the works!
Our team has been busy creating new lesson plans (a few related to the upcoming election), applying for grants, attending anti-hate conferences, dubbing our animation "Daniel's First Day" in Spanish, working on our IRB submission, & bringing D.U.C.C. into classrooms across the country!

D.U.C.C. Focus Group Quacking Down On Misinformation
After deliberation, the I2P and DHS judges announced three finalists to present their projects in a final presentation event to a panel of senior executives and guests. American University, D.U.C.C., is one of them and we will be presenting in front of the Department of Homeland Security on June 22! We are honored to represent AU and to show off all our hard work! Thank you for following us on this journey and stay tuned as we continue our work!
We conducted two focus groups to gauge students’ learning and qualitatively gain testimonials and perspectives from teachers. Our results show that after the lesson activities and watching the short animation, all students who participated knew misinformation is harmful!

While younger students are our target audience, we believe in creating a tool that involves and supports the people who are the backbone of our society- parents and educators. Through lessons and resources based in empathy and human connection, we hope to contribute to creating a society prepared to resist false information in an emotionally intelligent way.
This is a clip from “Daniel’s First Day”, an animation created by D.U.C.C. to help teachers educate at-risk 1st-4th graders and promote digital literacy. Teacher Owl explains to Daniel the duck and his classmates about the dangers of misinformation and the importance of checking your sources.
We're working on Developing & Using Critical Comprehension in students who spend a large amount of time online.
Young children who learn digitally are especially at risk of being exposed to harmful information, and through comprehensive and up-to-date empathy based digital literacy, they can develop a toolkit to combat misinformation.
A sneak peek into what we’re working on- website coming soon!
