Current themes include: Lived Experience, Development of Effective National Su***de Prevention Strategy and Practice, Helplines Best Practices, Genetics and Neurobiology of Su***de, Nomenclatur
We are delighted to announce the theme for World Su***de Prevention Day for the years 2024-2026: "Changing the Narrative on Su***de" with an associated call to action: "Start the Conversation". Selected through a public consultation with more than 250 responses from 56 countries, this will be our official theme for the next three years.
The aim of the theme is to raise awareness about the importance of changing the narrative surrounding su***de, reducing stigma, and encouraging open conversations to prevent su***des. This theme also includes emphasising the need to prioritise mental health and su***de prevention in policy-making, calling for government action.
As members of the community, everyone plays a crucial role in changing the narrative on su***de. Whether you are a mental health professional, a survivor, a friend, or a family member, your voice matters. Together, we can challenge stigma, promote understanding, and save lives.

International Womenβs Day is an annual day of celebration on March 8, observed with a focus on issues such as gender equality, women empowerment, and reproductive rights. As a day dedicated to celebrating women and their achievements, it is also an opportunity for all of us to work towards providing equal opportunities and inclusion for women everywhere.
On this important global day, IASP reaffirms its commitment to invest in women and accelerate progress. IASP calls for increased awareness and support for women's empowerment, inclusion, and women-focused su***de prevention initiatives globally; we strive to ensure and sustain ongoing efforts to promote gender-sensitive approaches to su***de prevention. Addressing the systemic problems and reducing women's vulnerability to su***de requires both government action and policy reforms.

World Day of Social Justice, rooted in promoting fairness and social justice within globalisation, is being observed today. This day is an opportunity for us all to work towards promoting human dignity and equitable development. Every person has the right to be treated with respect and dignity, especially when they are most vulnerable. Criminalising su***de disrespects human dignity and makes it more difficult for those in need to get help. Decriminalisation of su***de is an important step to decreasing the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness and su***de and upholding the dignity of every person.
It is also important, at the same time, to commit to minimising high levels of inequality globally, especially in accessing affordable mental health services for all. Having access to mental health services ought to be a fundamental human right rather than a privilege. We must advocate for universal access to low-cost mental health and su***de prevention services for people of all backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. There is no sustainable development without social justice.

Every year in February, Safer Internet Day is observed to promote awareness of the need for a better and safer internet for everyone, particularly for children and young people. The theme for this year is "Together for a better internet".
The internet can be a positive space where we provide a source of support to people by sharing helpful resources on mental health and su***de prevention online.
Let us make a collective effort to create a safe online environment that encourages reaching out and help-seeking. Together, we can support each other and promote a culture of kindness and understanding on the internet.

Time to Talk Day, marked every year in February in the UK, is all about discussing mental health with friends, family, and coworkers and building supportive networks. Having these conversations is important because listening in an empathetic and compassionate manner can rekindle hope in someone experiencing mental distress or suicidal thoughts. As mental health struggles can often be hidden due to stigma, we can create an open, help-seeking environment by having more conversations around it. We do not need to have perfect solutions. This day, and every day, it can be helpful to simply give someone the time and space to talk about their distress or suicidal thoughts. We can also share our own stories and experiences to let people know they are not alone in their struggles.

On Universal Health Coverage Day, the importance of including su***de prevention in comprehensive and accessible mental health services should be highlighted. This year, we urge leaders to invest in mental health and su***de prevention across the continuum of care by including quality services as part of universal health coverage. Adequate funding and resources must be allocated to mental health services, ensuring accessibility and care for all.
For example, a national su***de prevention hotline (988) staffed with responders trained in su***de prevention was recently launched in Canada to provide support to people struggling with mental health challenges and suicidal thoughts. Crisis support services like these provide an immediate and private way for people in distress to get emotional support and assistance.

Universal Health Coverage Day 2023 - IASP Universal health coverage envisions a world where no one needs to struggle with financial hardships to receive high-quality healthcare.
We would like to thank everyone who participated in our campaign through donations and sharing of our message. Your contribution and support is invaluable to us to achieve our mission of preventing su***de and suicidal behaviour worldwide.
The human right to health can be protected by implementing a public health approach that allows vulnerable people to receive adequate mental health care and assistance during times of need without the fear of legal repercussions.
Decriminalisation of su***de is a major stepping stone towards supporting the right to access care because it does not merely act as a legal reform. But instead, it serves as the recognition that individuals in distress need support instead of punishment. Support workers can respond differently when laws change because public administration, which includes crises and social support services, also changes with them. Additionally, it fosters an atmosphere of open communication by removing obstacles to discussing something against the law. Therefore, decriminalisation sends a powerful message that society is dedicated to encouraging understanding, compassion, and promoting comprehensive mental health support.
Accessible and affordable mental health services, supportive environments, crisis interventions, and policies and programs that recognise the autonomy and dignity of individuals are imperative to realise the 2023 theme βFreedom, Equality and Justice for Allβ.
This , we call on world leaders, mental health professionals, and communities to unite in implementing and strengthening mental health and su***de prevention services globally, as an integral part of upholding human rights.
