It's Loneliness Awareness Week!

For the past 50 years, AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers in the Senior Companion program have reduced loneliness in their communities, like Murphy.

Murphy is an AmeriCorps Seniors volunteer serving in the Senior Companion program at the Council on Aging of West Florida on Aging of West Florida. For five years, he has assisted other older adults, including veterans. Murphy’s companion, Barbara, rarely left her room, and was struggling with loneliness, depression, and malnourishment following the loss of her husband. However, through Murphy’s compassion and patience, she found joy again. Murphy began cooking her nutritious meals, then encouraged her to spend time outdoors, inviting her to sit with him on the porch and eventually taking walks around the neighborhood.

In addition to being an AmeriCorps Seniors volunteer, Murphy serves on the Senior Advisory Board at the Council on Aging and helps communities experiencing homelessness.
