WILLEM de LOOPER: Paintings 1972-1975
January 27 – March 2, 2024
Washington, DC - HEMPHILL is pleased to announce the exhibition, WILLEM de LOOPER: Paintings 1972 – 1975, opening on Saturday, January 27, 2024, from 2:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m. The exhibition will remain on view through March 2, 2024.
Each core Washington Color School artist created and became identified with their initial motifs and techniques... Willem de Looper is identified by edge-to-edge overall staining into raw canvas. All the artists worked with unprimed canvas and acrylic paint, although some of the earliest works are in Magna, a precursor to acrylic...
In 1973, after de Looper’s initial recognition and success, he and his wife Frauke made a long-anticipated trip across the United States... Upon Willem's return to DC, he limited his color palette. He began applying paint with various paint rollers, developing a motif of horizontal bands of layered colors, adhering to staining with acrylic paint into un-primed canvas. The divide between the bands of color points to the drama of the sometimes severe, and other times the nearly indistinguishable boundaries within nature. De Looper can be applauded for extending the content of the Color School by holding back from illustrating the visual experience of desert and sky while creating parallel experiences reminiscent of his and Frauke's revelations in the American Southwest...
Our previous de Looper exhibition, “Paintings 1968 - 1972,” was quintessential Washington Color School. Like his contemporaries, the work does not refer to anything outside the painting itself, yet they are not hermetic. The current show, “Paintings 1972 - 1975” opens up by letting the spirit of the sky and the earth in, without compromising what the Color School had achieved, a second act and a rarity among his peers.

HEDIEH JAVANSHIR ILCHI BALANCES PATTERN WITH PAINTERLY ABSTRACTION
By Kriston Capps, The Washington Post
December 13, 2023
HEDIEH JAVANSHIR ILCHI: We are forever folding into the night was reviewed by Kriston Capps for The Washington Post.
Hedieh Javanshir Ilchi might be two painters.
One is the hand behind the gorgeous tazhib: intricate patterns of illumination borrowed from Islamic art forms. In her paintings, Ilchi designs floral and lattice motifs based on Persian crafts, drawing on her experience growing up in Tehran.
The other painter is experimental: an abstract-oriented artist looking at new ways to build up surfaces. This painter produces clouds and stains in a toxic palette, making bold textured works that look almost hazardous to the touch.
On Ilchi’s surfaces, violent abstraction and delicate illumination jockey for significance. Her perfectly hyphenated paintings take the form of surreal landscapes. The stars in her skies peek through arabesque ornamentation. The mountains on her horizons rise over luminous veils.

Happy Birthday to artist, Jacob Kainen!
Jacob Kainen was born in Waterbury, CT, on December 7th in 1909. He studied at the Art Students League and worked in the WPA Graphics Division in New York. In 1942, he moved to Washington DC, where he lived and worked until his death in 2001.
His work took root in the social realism of the 1930s, later becoming involved in the development of abstract expressionism. In 1946, he was included on Ad Reinhardt’s “Tree of Modern American Art,” a succinct map of the artists and movements defining art of the modern era. Kainen’s visceral abstractions of the 1950s encapsulated the intensity of the era, and though a break from abstraction led to a body of figurative work in the 1960s, he entered into a period of dramatic refinement of abstraction in the 1970s and 80s. Kainen’s vast fields of color and exploration of light and space allow for visual and intellectual reflection. Kainen’s work is represented in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington DC, the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY, the Yale University Museum, New Haven, CT, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY, among other public and private collections.
