EXHIBIT DESCRIPTION
“These paintings focus on the Atlantic Seaboard and how segregation and “Jim Crow” laws, which were meant to degrade the humanity of Black people, instead inspired the creation of these Black beaches and recreational areas. I did onsite research at six beaches, from Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts, to American Beach, Florida. Five of these are still in existence as primarily Black-owned beaches and/or municipalities.
With the paintings, all oil on canvas, I am depicting in a narrative style the history, joy, and comradery of a shared beach experience. With the exception of “Wade In,” which addresses the confrontational racism of the era and the riot that led President Johnson to sign the Civil Rights Bill less than a month later. The paintings pay attention to the uniqueness of each beach and the similarities. They emphasize characters’ interactions and the compositional flow of scenes, referencing the periods of each beach’s respective histories. This series was made possible with the support of the Honfleur Artist in Residence Program.”

This series of oil-on-canvas paintings focuses on the Atlantic Seaboard and how segregation, which meant diminishing the humanity of Black people, instead inspired the creation of these Black beaches and recreational areas. Says Freeman, "I chose to portray the fellowship, joy, and history of Black Beaches, a history of overcoming the degradation of racist "Jim Crow" laws.
The series features six beaches, from Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts, to American Beach, Florida; five still exist as primarily Black-owned beaches or municipalities. "The paintings pay attention to the uniqueness of each beach and the similarities. They emphasize characters' interactions and the compositional flow of scenes, referencing the periods of each beach's respective histories, " says Freeman.

"An evocative and immersive exhibition that marks the first gallery show of the nomadic Family Arts Museum. Curated by Melani N. Douglass, this powerful exhibition delves into the concept of home as a portable sanctuary, especially for people experiencing gentrification, migration, under the guise of urban renewal. The exhibition features the compelling photography of David L. McDuffie, artist-in-residence at the Family Arts Museum, who has documented Black culture across over 17 cities in the U.S. and the Caribbean. Each photograph tells a story of resilience and adaptability, offering a visual narrative that explores the intrinsic human need for a sense of belonging. Over the course of the exhibition, the gallery evolves to include aspects of the physical home and written responses from Douglass and McDuffie to be embedded into the photographs and wall space."

OPENING THURSDAY AT 7PM! Honfleur Gallery proudly presents the first part of the “Building Me a Home” exhibition series, curated by Melani N. Douglass. This compelling exhibition, “HOME/MADE : FLESH/BONE,” will run from July 11 to August 17, 2024, and focuses on the deeply personal and internal aspects of what it means to call a place home.
The “Building Me a Home” series is a profound exploration of the multifaceted concept of home. This ambitious project unfolds in three parts, delving into the internal home we carry within us, the communal and physical home we share, and the global home that connects us all. Each part of the series not only showcases art but also engages the community in meaningful dialogues about our relationship with home, the impacts of displacement, and the fundamental question of whether home is a right.
🎨THIS SATURDAY AT HONFLEUR! Join John Johnson and the Playback players as they explore how art changes and enriches us. Also, participate in an art activity that can be done at your kitchen table! MAY 31, 2024 IN PICTURES - auxilium continuum: reframing Opening Reception at Honfleur Gallery. Photos courtesy of Albert Ting.
Curated by Marta Lola Staudinger, auxilium continuum: reframing is both a seed and a field study. It initiates dialogue around under-investigated aspects of feminine energy (creation, intuition, fluidity) in the arts marketplace by gifting the participating artists time, space, and financial compensation to create freely. As a result, with deep reverence for practice and process, artists Ceci Cole Mcinturff, Rania Hassan, Jean Jinho Kim, Leah Lewis and Nicole Salimbene respond using a variety of media to present individual expressions of current needs and/or themes in their practices.
