We conclude our Global Careers Podcast Season 7 with Melissa Schoeb, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Nokia. In this season, we focused on the intersection of technology and globalization across all types of industries and functions, and today we feature an executive who has held leadership positions in global communications, telecommunications, oil and gas, and consulting. Melissa is currently based in London, having first started at Nokia in Finland where she moved during the pandemic. A child of a diplomat, Melissa was raised in many different countries and moved often across the world, so it comes naturally to her to be interested in and comfortable with global work and cross-cultural interaction. And yet, she shares that there will always be challenges when working internationally – especially when you have a family – you just learn to make it work! In her interview, Melissa also talks about her observations on the current trends and developments in the area of technology in general and in her work in particular, inevitably touching upon the role of AI globally – in terms of regulations, security, and strategic use. Tune in to hear about this and more: https://business.gwu.edu/gw-ciber-podcast
And while you are there, perhaps you will get drawn into listening to our previous episodes featuring many other accomplished global professionals who generously shared their time and experience with us!

We are happy to feature as our next podcast guest Gilday – a GW School of Business alumnus and a member of GW-CIBER's Advisory Council. Tim is Emerging Technology Senior Director at General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT) - a global technology and professional services company working with agencies across the U.S. government, defense, and intelligence community. In his role, he is tasked with keeping abreast of changing technology trends as well as potential vendor partners that can supply government agencies with new technology solutions. Tim's educational background in industrial/organizational psychology and business, coupled with his long-term interest in science and technology, have been major contributing factors for his career trajectory and achievements so far. Like the earlier podcast guests this season, Tim emphasizes the fact that seldom there will be a job without the use of some technology in the near future, and seldom there will be an industry not impacted by globalization. So, students need to prepare and acquire the necessary skills that will make them competitive on the job market. Tune in to hear what these skills are and what other advice Tim has to share.

During GW-CIBER's FDIB Germany program, participants got a strong sense of Frankfurt as the financial capital of the EU. At the MoneyMuseum, in the Deutsche Bundesbank, everyone learned how to identify counterfeit 50 Euro bills, and also got the chance to lift a pure gold bar (or at least try!). The importance of currency stability and security emphasized at the Money Museum was further driven home by a visit to the Historisches Museum Frankfurt's exhibition "Inflation 1923: War, Money, Trauma." On their final day together, the group visited the Frankfurter Börse and took in the exciting backdrop where the stock exchange and media coverage of it takes place. The week was capped off by a farewell meal together at a new restaurant in a renovated historic depot---which truly captured the Frankfurt feel of 'history meets modernity'. Auf Wiedersehen, Germany! Till we meet again!

GW-CIBER's Germany FDIB cohort traveled to Stuttgart---via the Autobahn, of course---to spend an intensive day focused on the automotive industry in Germany. We first spoke with Sebastian Rux, former Head of Global Strategy at Daimler, who challenged us to think deeply and critically when evaluating a company's approaches to sustainability strategy. From there, we enjoyed a visit to the Daimler Campus and its vast (and beautiful) Mercedes-Benz Museum. The group closed out the day with a site visit to Bosch, the world's largest parts supplier. We had a lively discussion with Peter Lukassen, Director of Sustainability, who presented the company's impressive strides towards achieving a second life for all of their products, as exemplified in the automotive aftermarket. In the evening, we returned to Frankfurt, again on the Autobahn...obeying the speed limit the whole way, naturally.
