This webinar will focus on the Entertainment Industries Council (EIC) resources about proper weapons terminology, media engagement, and how the entertainment industry can help reduce the appeal of certain weapons through prop substitution and creative storytelling, including crafting characters as the heroes, rather than their weapons. Presenters include Marie Dyak (President/CEO, EIC) and Michael Finan (Producer, Bonafina Films). You are encouraged to watch Mr. Finan's recent work with the Detroit Youth Choir in advance of the program. Connie St. John (WIFV President) will moderate the discussion.

It's heating up outside and onscreen with WIFV Film Club's latest series: Summer Strangers. Each month, from June through September, we'll discuss a film that finds its protagonists making a new friend — or foe — who will change their lives, often in disastrous ways.
The August selection is COLLATERAL (2004) starring Jamie Foxx, Tom Cruise, and Jada Pinkett Smith. Directed by Michael Mann. A cab driver finds himself the hostage of an engaging contract killer as he makes his rounds from hit to hit during one night in Los Angeles.
The WIFV Film Club is open to all and is a great way to build connections with fellow members of the film community. You watch the film in advance and we meet on the third Monday of each month, from 7:30 – 8:30 pm ET.

Over the weekend of July 26 to 28, WONDER PICTURES in conjunction with Robin's Nest Media Productions filmed their latest short titled "BATS IN THE BELFRY." Written by Robin Noonan-Price, owner of Robin's Nest Media Productions, this short recounts an actual event that happened to Robin's Italian grandmother.
A bat flew into her house, family was called to help and what ensued was a comedy of errors. Though some dramatic license was taken, overall, it is a true story. The film is now in post- production and will be submitted to the festival circuit when completed. WIFV members were on set - Robin Noonan-Price, writer (WIFV Past President); Sheri Ratick Stroud, Executive Producer (WIFV Board Member/Chair of Women of Vision); Sandra Brennan, Script Supervisor (WIFV Board Member), Sofia Sandoval, as the granddaughter (Programming Staff with WIFV), and Geri Reinhart, Craft Services and PA (member). We welcomed a new member to WIFV, Julia Smith (Robin's niece) who was our PA/production photographer on the set. It was a great weekend. "Not only did we create, but we had a great time being together!"

In this episode, host Tara Jabbari sits with writer and director Molly McGlynn to talk about her new film, “Fitting In.” The comedic coming-of-age drama, starring Maddie Ziegler and Emily Hampshire, is a semi-autobiographical story about Molly’s journey with MRKH Syndrome. Molly discusses the challenges but also the support she had while sharing such a personal story on a reproductive condition. They also talk about the responses the film has gotten since its release, the importance of representation, plus what it’s like to direct your own material versus being a guest director on established television shows.

WIFV invites you to celebrate CREATIVE RESILIENCE: RECLAIMING YOUR POWER AS AN ARTIST
A reading, conversation, and signing with Erica Ginsberg
Join us in person at Interface Media Group, 1233 20th Street NW on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at 5:30 pm.
Whether you make a living full-time in the world of media or you do it on top of other work, there is no doubt that you do so out of love for telling meaningful stories and growing as an artist. However, we all face challenges of motivation, confidence, creative blocks, and the realities of rejection. Erica Ginsberg recently wrote the book Creative Resilience intended to address these challenges. She will join us to share from her book Creative Resilience and spark a conversation about how to navigate the ups and downs of the creative process. While she will have books available for purchase (for $19.99) and signing, you do not need to have read or purchase the book to get something from this talk.
Erica Ginsberg is a writer, documentary filmmaker, story consultant, and nonprofit professional who puts creativity at the center of all that she does. She is a co-host of the online documentary community The D-Word, on the team of the mental health initiative DocuMentality, and co-founded and previously served as Executive Director of Docs In Progress. She has been a proud member of Women in Film and Video for more than 25 years.

Join us in this follow-up to our June session. In Part 2 of our editor's toolkit session, we will look at our workflows and share the methods we use to achieve our goals. We'll pull back to examine things more broadly than the specific tools, apps, or plugins we use. We'd like to investigate the approaches you take to your projects. We will cover things like note-taking, time management, and research methods. We'll share and examine how we undertake a variety of projects, from short promos to long-form documentaries. Join us, even if it's just to check in with other editors and hear how they deal with similar issues that you might be dealing with. Sometimes, just knowing you aren't the only one facing these types of challenges can be a relief.

More stories get written than make it to screen, so what becomes of these lost narratives? In this episode, host Candice Bloch sits down with producer James Walker to dive into a project he and his company, Velocity Studios have embarked upon to revive some of these scripts in an exciting new way. You’ll learn how they produce immersive experiences that envelop a listener in a rich audio-only world. Hear about the benefits and challenges faced when adapting a story intended for screen into a medium that requires its audience to flex their imaginations in a different way. In this interview, they focus on the first project put out in this “Greatest Scripts Never Made” series, a cyberpunk noir called The Metal Detective. You’ll even get a taste of The Metal Detective during this exploration of audio dramas and what they could mean for projects that deserve to be shared with the world.
