The Native American Political Leadership Program is a FULL SCHOLARSHIP program that brings Native students and recent graduates to Washington, DC for internships and advanced coursework in tribal policy at The George Washington University.

PROGRAM DATES: January 11, 2021 - April 30, 2021

NAPLP is open to undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates of Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian descent, and the full scholarship covers tuition, fees, student housing, airfare, and stipends for books and living expenses.

NAPLP Alumna Christina Haswood ('19), Navajo Nation, is running for the 10th District seat in the Kansas House of Representatives! If elected, she will be the youngest to represent the 10th District.

Haswood currently serves as a Research Assistant for the National Council of Urban Indian Health, based in Washington D.C., and the Center for American Indian Community Health, which is a part of the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

“It is important to branch out and see how others operate, whether it is in a different state, or in [Washington] D.C., understanding how the federal system works. We gain these experiences then come back, and apply it to our communities.”

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Elizabeth Rule has been appointed Director of the AT&T Center for Indigenous Politics & Policy!

Rule, an enrolled citizen of the Chickasaw Nation, is an Assistant Professor of Professional Studies and Faculty in Residence at the George Washington University. She previously served as the Center’s Assistant Director and holds the concurrent position of Academic Director of the Semester in Washington Politics Program. In her new role, Rule will oversee the Native American Political Leadership Program and INSPIRE Pre-College Program while spearheading the Center’s research initiatives.

“It has been my pleasure to serve as the Assistant Director of the AT&T Center for Indigenous Politics and Policy for the past three years, and I now look forward to continuing the important work of the center and expanding in new directions as the Director,” she said. “My goal as Director is to serve Indian Country and support tribal sovereignty through a combination of cutting-edge research, education initiatives for Native youth and thought leadership on pressing political and policy issues.”

Previously, Rule has held posts as a Postdoctoral Fellow in American Studies and the Critical Race, Gender, and Culture Studies Collaborative at American University, Visiting Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Ford Foundation Fellow. She has received support from Holisso: The Center for the Study of Chickasaw History and Culture, the American Indian College Fund, Native Americans in Philanthropy, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Rule received her Ph.D. and M.A. in American Studies from Brown University, and her B.A. from Yale University.
