When Margaret Dave-Smith joined AFSCME thirty years ago, she had no idea how much her life would change. “Everything I gained . . . resources to help my community and co-workers. Education for my children and grandson . . . it started with AFSCME.”
As an administrative professional for the Ohio Department of Transportation, Margaret joined our union to stay connected to her co-workers and make change. Now as a member of Ohio AFSCME Retiree Chapter 1184, she’s still fighting on the issues she cared about as a worker.
Margaret is secretary of Chapter 1184 and Sub-Chapter 108. She’s passionate about inviting other retirees to join us. “Being a part of something and helping build retiree participation . . . it strengthens our union.”
Margaret is always brainstorming how to make meetings and events more accessible to others and ways to get more members to sign up. “Everything about being a retiree is about education and encouragement . . . I got involved as a way to make things better for my children and grandchildren.”
All week, we’re celebrating the contributions of AFSCME retirees like Margaret who build and strengthen our union with their activism. Follow along for more stories.
