Big thanks to everyone who last week helped us raise over our $3000 goal to offset the recent postage increase! Because of our generous donors and volunteers we are able to keep getting things done! Of course, we are always accepting donations at http://dcbookstoprisoners.org/donate/

“I cannot express in words how grateful I am to you, I could not have asked for more. God bless you. I wish there were more people in this world like you. I know each and everyone of us have kind hearts, some of us are just to tough (scared) to let them shine. Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Its truly a wonderful feeling to have people I have never met care for me, you are a light for us all.”

New postage needed! Because prices for media mail packages have increased over 10% this week, each letter will cost about an extra 50 cents each to answer! That is a sizeable increase in our spending. DC BtP is an entirely volunteer-run organization that relies on the generosity of our donors to get our work done. We are hoping to raise $3,000 to offset the postage increase for the next year. Please donate to help us reach that goal at http://dcbookstoprisoners.org/donate/

This week USPS has increased media mail rates by over 10%! Every package we send will now costs over 50 cents more to send, and considering we send over 6000 packages a year that is a significant increase. DC BtP is entirely volunteer-run and relies entirely on donor contributions to survive. We are hoping to raise $3,000 to offset the postage increase for the next year. Please donate to help us reach that goal at http://dcbookstoprisoners.org/donate/

Yet another postage increase this week that greatly impacts the work we do! With the increase, a two-pound package of books costs 51 cents (or 12%) more, and a four-pound package is 54 cents more. DC Books to Prisons sends more than 6,000 packages of books to prisoners across the country a year so this increase adds up to a more than $3,000 increase in our budget — and more than 6% compared to the year before. So far this year DC BtP has mailed nearly 3,000 packages, and to keep up that pace, we need some extra help. Will you donate to help us cover these increased costs? We are hoping to raise $3,000 to offset the postage increase for the next year. Please donate to help us reach that goal at http://dcbookstoprisoners.org/donate/

About DC Books to Prisons

Founded in 1999, DC Books to Prisons provides free books to individual prisoners. We also develop and support prison libraries. Our work is done solely by concerned volunteers using donated time and resources. DC Books to Prisons is a fiscally sponsored project of Empowerment WORKS, a 501c3 nonprofit organization.

In 2009, the program expanded to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where four to five volunteers raise funds, collect books, and meet in donated space to answer prisoners' requests.

Yearly, between the two sites, we send more than 6,000 packages to prisoners with around 250 from Alabama and the rest from DC. These packages go to prisoners in over 600 prisons in the United States. We serve state and federal prisoners in 34 states, and federal prisoners in Arizona. With the exception of DC residents in federal prisons, we do not serve inmates in CT, FL, IL, MA, ME, MI, NH, NJ, NY, OR, PA, RI, VT, WA, or WI.
