Introducing IABD's Emerging Choreographer Residency
The International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD) Emerging Choreographer Residency is a new program that supports the professional development and engagement of emerging and early-career choreographers.
As part of this program, a single Choreographer will be carefully selected and paired with a mentor within the Black Dance Sector. They will receive a one-week residency during this year’s Conference and Festival, culminating in a work-in-progress showing and Q&A. The selected choreographer can bring up to eight dancers to accompany them at this year’s 35th annual Conference and Festival, in Pittsburgh, PA. Before the showing, the selected choreographer will receive invaluable mentorship from an established choreographer, providing a supportive and guided environment for their artistic growth.
IABD offers this program with the intention of connecting established choreographers with emerging and early-career choreographers. The program hopes to expand conversations around practice and performance and create access by building connections and relationships within the IABD network.
The deadline for submission is Tuesday, September 3, 2024.
Please include the following with your submission:

We are excited to announce the launch of IABD's Kitchen Table Talks, and we want to hear from you! Your participation in our survey is crucial in curating topics and discussions for our upcoming webinar series. These webinars will address current affairs in the Black Dance Sector, providing valuable insights and discussions for our community by covering various subjects, including professional development for students, auditionees, arts administrators, and more. We will also delve into affinity groups for performers, choreographers, LGBTQIA+ arts professionals, parents, and others in the industry. Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your thoughts and help shape the content of this exciting new program.
The Kitchen Table Talk program is a peer learning-based webinar series. Initially a COHI | MOVE program component, this program has expanded its offerings to be a sector-wide professional development opportunity. The bi-monthly webinar series will name inherent challenges in the dance sector and provide resources that develop opportunities for the sector to overcome those challenges, while developing/fortifying business acumen, and offering a platform for relevant industry conversations.
Each 90-minute webinar is designed to ignite your curiosity and foster engagement. It features 30-60 minutes of training/presentation, followed by 30-60 minutes of group discussion. This innovative structure is designed to foster a sense of community and enhance the dance sector.
The deadline for submission is Friday, August 2, 2024.
