Grammy-nominated artist and Guggenheim Fellow, is more than just a performer – he’s a creative architect. Weaving spontaneous composition, storytelling, and genre-bending mastery, KOKAYI crafts impactful experiences that resonate across musical boundaries.
A sought-after collaborator and curator, KOKAYI champions under-recognized artistic movements, embraces technological revolutions, and thrives in unexpected creative spaces. His sonic alchemy has graced over 60 tracks, spanning jazz, hip-hop, rock, and R&B. He pushes boundaries with Grammy-nominated artists and even the Interledger Foundation on their FUTURE | Money arts initiative.

Meet the Winner of The Washington Award for Dance Angela Miracle Gladue!
is a nehiyaw (Plains Cree)/Greek Interdisciplinary artist from the Treaty 6 Territory of amiskwaciy-wâskahikan (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) and is a proud member of Frog Lake First Nation. Since 2016, Angela has toured as one of the lead dancers for The Halluci Nation (Formally known as A Tribe Called Red) where she and her crew mate - “Creeasian”, represented Powwow Dance & Breaking on stages worldwide. She is currently a dance educator through The Washington Ballet and City Dance DC and a 2023-2024 Culture Caucus Member at The Kennedy Center, Social Impact program.
Meet the winner of The Washington Award for Visual Arts, Alanna Fields!
is a mixed-media artist and archivist whose work both deconstructs and reconstructs Black q***r memory and history through a multidisciplinary engagement with photographic archives.
Fields’ work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at Paris Photo, Art Basel Miami, Felix Art Fair LA, and Expo Chicago. Her work has been featured in museum exhibitions at The Aldrich Contemporary Museum, The High Museum of Art, The Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art and Storytelling, and The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporic Art. She has presented solo exhibitions at The Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art and Baxter Street Camera Club of NY and participated in group exhibitions at Yossi Milo Gallery, Yancey Richardson Gallery, Latchkey Gallery, Fragment Gallery, Residency Art Gallery, David Castillo Gallery and the Silver Eye Center for Photography, among others.
Fields received her MFA in Photography from Pratt Institute and has given lectures on her work at the Aperture Foundation, Light Work, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Parson’s New School, Syracuse University, and Stanford University. Fields is a Gordon Parks Foundation Scholar and Po***ck Krasner Foundation grant recipient who has participated in residencies at Silver Arts Projects, Light Work, Baxter St. CCNY, Fountainhead Arts, and TILT Institute for the Contemporary Image, among others. Her work has been commissioned by and featured in major publications such as The New York Times, The Atlantic, Aperture Magazine, and FOAM Magazine. Fields currently serves as a Lecturer of Photography at Howard University and is based in Washington, D.C.
Meet the winner of The Washington Award for Interdisciplinary Arts, Holly Bass.
is a multidisciplinary performance artist and educator. Her work explores the effects of gender, class, and race in American culture. Her visual artwork includes photography, installation, video, and performance. A Cave Canem Fellow, she has published poems in numerous journals and anthologies. She was a 2020–2022 Live Feed Resident Artist at New York Live Arts and a 2021–22 Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow. She studied modern dance (under Viola Farber) and creative writing at Sarah Lawrence College before earning her Master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. Her work has been presented at the National Portrait Gallery, the Seattle Art Museum, Art Basel Miami (Project Miami Fair), and the 2022 Venice Biennale as part of Simone Leigh’s Loophole of Retreat. She is currently the National Director for Turnaround Arts, a program which uses the arts strategically to transform historically under-resourced public elementary schools.

Speakers Pepukaye Bardouille (Office of the Prime Minister of Barbados) and Masood Ahmed (Center for Global Development) engaged a captive audience as they discussed international financing for development and prosperity, focusing on Barbados’s response to the climate crisis.

Four D.C. artists in the fields of Music, Dance, Visual Arts, and Interdisciplinary Practice (one award per category) who prioritize social impact in their practice, will be awarded $15,000 of unrestricted cash to support them in freely developing and pursuing creative ideas.
