Congressman Ronald Vernie Dellums (November 24, 1935 – July 30, 2018) was a politician who served as Mayor of Oakland (2007-2011). He had served thirteen terms as a Member of Congress from CA’s 9th Congressional District (1971-1998), after which he worked as a lobbyist in DC.
He served in USMC. He received his AA from Oakland City College, his BA from SFSU, and his MSW from the UCB. He became a psychiatric social worker and political activist in the African-American community beginning in the 1960s. He taught at SFSU and UCB.
In 1972, he began his campaign to end the apartheid policies of South Africa. Fourteen years later, the House of Representatives passed his anti-apartheid legislation, calling for a trade restriction against South Africa and immediate divestment by American corporations. The bill, the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986, had broad bipartisan support. It called for sanctions against South Africa and stated preconditions for lifting the sanctions, including the release of all political prisoners. President Reagan called for a policy of "constructive engagement" and vetoed the bill; his veto was overridden. It was the first override in the 20th century of a presidential foreign policy veto.
On June 16, 2006, after a careful ballot count, he was unofficially declared the winner of the Oakland mayoral race. He garnered a 50.18 percent majority to win the election.
He was elected to the Berkeley City Council and served (1967-1970).
His fight against apartheid in South Africa was the subject of a Disney Channel made-for-TV film, The Color of Friendship.
He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He was a member of the Fraternity's World Policy Council, a think tank whose purpose is to expand the fraternity's involvement in politics, and social and current policy to encompass international concerns.

The Washington Post https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/07/22/noose-construction-industry-racism/
Black workers, who make up only 6 percent of the sector, have found many of the 55 nooses reported at 40 work sites since 2015, a Post analysis has found. The incidents offer a window into an industry that Wendell Stemley, director emeritus of the National Association of Minority Contractors, says has “deep roots in segregation,” when Black workers were relegated to menial jobs with almost no path for advancement. In his view, the incidents signify the lack of inclusion of Black people in construction, who make up 6 percent of the workforce — versus 12 percent of all U.S. workers — and about 1.2 percent of its business owners.
“The mission of the noose isn’t that ‘I’m going to hang you at lunchtime,’” he said. “The mission of the noose is that you are excluded.”

Wendell R Stemley of NAMC explains How infrastructure and racial equity are intertwined, or at least, how they should be. In the past, public infrastructure projects were outright racist, siting highways in Black neighborhoods and toxic manufacturing and waste effluent near minority communities. Even now, with the government trying to redress and correct these wrongs, federal funds intended for minority or disadvantaged neighborhoods have routinely been redirected to affluent areas by state or local officials. "Too often, the infrastructure debate in Washington and the media centers on the total amount of funding. This is important. But for minority communities, the more important debate is not just how much is spent, but where, who and how it is spent." Going forward, the federal government must put safeguards on funds so they're spent as intended, and must also take into account the ways that contractors circumvent federal regulations to cut DBE minority & black contractors out of the bidding pools and black workers out of the workforce.
Congratulations President elect Biden nominates Rep Marcia Fudge as HUD Secretary. With additional NAMC supporters Rep. Hank Johnson , Rep Stacey Plaskett and the late Rep. John Lewis. The Congressional Black Caucus brought together a distinguished panel of federal, state and local officials, including experts in the transportation industry for the “Transportation Braintrust: Embracing Innovation, Inspiring Leaders and Bridging Opportunities.” The purpose of the transportation focused panel was to educate congressional representatives about the issues affecting people of color in the US (i.e. streets and highways, public transportation, trains etc). A broad spectrum of ideas was discussed, including ones facing local communities, minority suppliers, contractors and vendors.
