Pitango serves artisanal gelato made with organic, grassfed milk and vegan sorbets made with organic fruit. No artificial flavors- just wholesome goodness.

Noah Dan, who spent his childhood in Trieste, Italy, founded Pitango in 2007 to re-create the pure and wholesome gelato of his youth. Still a family-owned business, Pitango now has five locations in DC, Maryland and Virginia. Trieste Coffee Culture 🇮🇹👌☕️

Illy was founded in Trieste in 1935 by Hungarian-born, Francesco Illy, who invented the first automatic coffee machine. The predecessor of contemporary espresso machines, his invention substituted pressurized water for steam.

In Trieste, each morning we celebrate Illy’s remarkable invention with a cappuccino or espresso. Thanks to espresso coffee culture is very much alive throughout the world 🌎

Benny just earned her gelato cone pin and her pin! While balancing her studies at GW Law School, Benny has mastered Pitango’s extensive gelato training and passed the Pitango Coffee Certification test!
It takes weeks of practice and perfecting espresso knowledge before Pitango team members can serve espresso drinks. Yay for Benny from Pitango and The Wharf for her Pitango dedication!

Creamy + Dreamy 👏 rather than displaying our gelato in an open-air freezer, Pitango uses a custom-made “bancone freezer” in which each freshly-batched gelato flavor has its own well where glycol circulates around each canister. This prevents freezer burn and flavor contamination while keeping our gelato at peak tempurature and texture 😍.

At Pitango we craft each and every batch of gelato and sorbet on site at each Pitango location.
While most scoop shops have to add preservatives, fats and gums to ship their ice cream from the factory to their stores, Pitango goes the extra mile to skip these additives and make fresh and (truly) artisanal gelato and sorbet.

Our Story

Noah Dan, who spent his childhood in Trieste, Italy, founded Pitango in 2007 to re-create the pure and wholesome gelato of his youth. Still a family-owned business, Pitango now has six locations in DC, Maryland and Virginia.

On a quest to find the best milk possible, Noah set up our own dairy on Pennsylvania’s Spring Wood Organic Farm—a pioneer in grass-fed, organic farming. We prepare gelato and sorbets on the farm to source milk from Spring Wood’s single herd, eggs from its free-range hens and fruit from local orchards.

After flavors are blended on the farm, we churn every batch of gelato and sorbet on location in each of our shops to ensure peak freshness.

The step of churning our products on site—and not in a factory—also enables us to bypass the need for chemicals, preservatives, stabilizers, colorings or flavorings. We think you’ll taste the difference.
