👩🏾🎓 Many of Maya’s Class of 2024 graduates have what others would see as insurmountable obstacles to get to and through their senior year of high school. This year, your Spring monetary contributions supply each Maya Angelou graduate with a tablet to help them succeed with their college or career plan of choice this Fall semester and beyond.
🗻 Tablets, which are larger than smartphones and smaller than library computers, can be helpful in annotating readings or taking class notes and have more storage space than ever to easily save files and documents. Supporting the Class of 2024’s Graduation Appeal creates an opportunity to recognize our outgoing Seniors for their years of hard work and persistence.
📲 Help sustain their smooth transition into their post-secondary education or professional endeavors. Celebrate our Senior Rebels!

Our CEO, Dr. Clarisse Mendoza Davis, is interviewed by Jason Pier of the American University School of Education - an institution which also serves as a Young Adult Learning Center CTE program partner. Read the full story here: tinyurl.com/AUinterviewsCMD and an excerpt of the interview below ⤵
🟦SOE: How did your schools address the social and emotional wellbeing of students, particularly after the COVID pandemic?
🟥CMD: There was a triple pandemic: COVID, the economic fallout from COVID for students and their families, and there was escalating violence in our community during the pandemic as well. We were up against these really traumatic student experiences. We amplified what we already do here at Maya, virtually, with staff members in many of our schools, including those in secure facilities, still going in to teach in person. During and after the pandemic, every scholar enrolled here has had a social worker or clinical counselor that they see regularly to provide support and to continue to assess if there is a need for more intensive clinical and mental health supports. Part of our clinical approach is fully integrating with the rest of the school, including our classroom teachers, including social emotional learning into the daily classroom experience for our students.
The Magic at the Maya Angelou Schools CEO Dr. Clarisse Mendoza Davis, MA ’08, leads the Maya Angelou Schools in Washington, DC, which has served more than 5,000 students in low-income urban areas for 25 years, specifically those who have not succeeded in traditional schools.
