We are saddened to hear about the passing of Bernice Johnson Reagon.
Reagon was a major force in the performing arts landscape of Washington, D.C. She founded the Freedom Singers, a touring group that raised funds for the civil rights movement.
Dr. Reagon spent her early years at the intersection of music and activism, earning her PhD in history from Howard University. A scholar, performer, composer, and producer, Dr. Reagon bolstered the D.C. community with her gifts.
She will truly be missed.

Hear some inspiring words on the importance of arts education from John Lithgow, friend and recipient of STC’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Lithgow pays tribute to our programs at Camp Shakespeare, which build valuable skills through engaging creative experiences.

The two productions are the culmination of the students' one year MFA program. This year, performances will take place at the Klein Theatre for the first time in STC Academy history. Both shows share similarities with their themes of love, betrayal, intrigue, and combat – a perfect balance for our cast to showcase their skills.

Introducing the cast of Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Academy Class of 2024
After completing a one-year intensive MFA program studying classical text, stage combat, and more, Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Academy Class of 2024 will have their final performance as a cohort this summer.
The Academy will run the two productions—Shakespeare’s ROMEO AND JULIET and Aphra Behn’s THE ROVER, OR THE BANISH'D CAVALIERS—in repertory from July 17 to 27. For the first time in their 24 years as a program, STC Academy will bring their Repertory productions to the mainstage at the Klein Theatre.

STC would like to congratulate José Alberto Uclés for receiving the The Hero Award at Capital Pride.
Uclés is originally from Honduras and has lived in Washington, D.C. for the last 30 years. Known as one of the , he is a proud collector of local art in D.C. Having a myriad of admiration in fine arts, he patronizes plays, musicals, operas, and music. Being an avid theatre aficionado, he has previously served as a Helen Hayes Awards judge for Outstanding Theatre.
Previously, Mr. Uclés was assistant director of development at the Whitman-Walker Clinic, the premier clinic for HIV/AIDS in D.C. from 1996–1999, and the first Latino to be director of the D.C. Capital Pride Festival from 1997–1999. He was also on the board of directors for the Millennium March on Washington for Equality 2000. His favored charity is Grandma’s House/Terrific Inc.—an organization that helps children and youth with HIV and AIDS in D.C..
