Today, on International Women's Day, we celebrate the significant achievements of women around the world. This year's theme, , provides an opportunity to examine the state of women in the federal workforce, specifically in leadership roles. Despite progress in women's representation and educational attainment, women remain underrepresented in senior-level leadership positions in corporate America and the U.S. government.

To address these challenges and promote equity in government, we must implement inclusive hiring practices, ensure equitable pay, provide equal opportunities for promotion and advancement, offer flexible work arrangements, and actively sponsor women leaders.

As we celebrate International Women's Day, let's reflect on how we can drive equity and remove barriers to women's representation and success in the workplace and in leadership roles. Check out the full LeadHERship series by the Partnership to learn more about this research and how government can advance equity.

Layered Leadership Examining How Political Appointments Stack Up at Federal Agencies 02/22/2024

New data from the Partnership's Center for Presidential Transition shows that when there are multiple levels of political appointments requiring Senate confirmation that report to one another, it takes longer to confirm appointees each layer you go down. In fact, there are five major Cabinet departments that have either four or five levels of Senate-confirmed appointees managing agency offices and bureaus.

The research helps show the urgent need to reduce the number of positions requiring Senate confirmation. Read more:

Layered Leadership Examining How Political Appointments Stack Up at Federal Agencies The number of positions in executive branch agencies that are subject to Senate confirmation has grown by nearly 60% since 1960. One consequence of this growth over time has been the formation of layers of Senate-confirmed political appointees within Cabinet departments. The phrase “layering” re...

Why another shutdown would be bad for the US military 11/14/2023

Congress is once again running down the clock on another potential shutdown that would furlough nearly 1.5 million federal employees and force more than 650,000 to work without pay.

A government shutdown would also force up to 1.3 million members of the U.S. military to serve without pay, weakening our national security and leading members of our military to suffer financially and lose out on vital training.
