Try Pie

Try Pie empowers a diverse group of teen girls in life and leadership skills through meaningful work The pies are then sold throughout our community.

Each week a group of teenage girls from Waterloo and Cedar Falls, along with adult mentors, meet for a time of learning and pie making. During our meetings, the young women develop faith, life, and business skills as they work alongside one another.

Every pie purchased helps empower our team of teens with financial literacy, job skills for their futures, and a place to belong.

Thank you to all the volunteers who joined in before Thanksgiving, too! 🫶

In 2023, we've grown to have our largest team of teens employed. While this time of year offers plenty of pies to make and work to do, Try Pie is looking for new wholesale partners in 2024 to keep our team busy all year long. In order to expand in this way, Try Pie needs a delivery vehicle to transport more pies to more places, and empower more teens with meaningful work.

Will you help us make a strong start toward our goal this ?!

This month, our Classroom Workshop focused on giving! Sharing our time, our skills, and our dollars can have huge impact on the community.

Teens spent time reflecting on what it looks like to give with humility.
They wrote affirmations of each other, sharing the unique gifts each has to offer.
They named what they saw as their own skills to give: something they know a lot about, something they can do, and something they're passionate about.
Finally, our team wrote letters to a person in our lives who has given much to each of us.

In this season, we are grateful for what we have and hope to be generous with what we have to give!

10/26/2023

During our October Classroom Workshop, teens learned the importance of preparing for their future. On top of habits like tracking spending, saving for emergencies, and budgeting, Try Pie supports teens in preparing for the big picture of their financial future too.

Try Pie offers two ways for teens to save beyond their bank account: a SIMPLE IRA with a 3% match, and 529 College Savings Accounts. Both these offerings are a chance for teens to learn how compound interest when investing can make a huge difference in reaching long term goals like obtaining higher education with less debt, or preparing well for retirement!

We can't wait to see what's ahead of each student as she builds financial habits that can change her future! 🫶

As a junior, Sydney's big goal she made with Try Pie back in January was to find out what careers she's most interested in.

Sydney has been taking small steps in learning about what she wants to do with her future and who she is as a person to achieve this goal.

Earlier this year, a Try Pie Classroom Workshop went through the Myers Briggs Personality test. That was helpful in understanding how her interests and tendancies in interacting with people might come into play. Through Try Pie's summer job shadow program, Sydney shadowed a role in the medical field responsible for taking CT scans and realized she didn't enjoy that so much. :) All this plus noticing what subjects in school she enjoys most has helped her narrow down 3 careers she can see herself pursuing after graduating in 2025!!

Her top picks *right now*:
🧪Chemist
🩺Anesthesiologist
🫀Cardiologist

This goal has helped Sydney be more aware about possible careers that could be a fit for her and how she can better prepare for the future.

We're proud of you Sydney!!

Another goal achieved! Dece is super excited to have met her goal of saving 30 dollars from each paycheck throughout this past year. She said learning to use her Credit Union banking app really helped her to stay on track with her goal.

Dece feels achieving this goal has been a great start of learning how to save money paycheck to paycheck and is a habit that will benefit her in the future. Her next steps are to increase the amount of money saved to reach bigger financial goals!!

Dece says to others looking to save: "Consistency is key. Finding a simple way to develop good financial habits will benefit you in the future."

Congrats on meeting your goal Dece!!🥳 🎉👏

Tell us about yourself!

“My name is Ally Tenson, and I'm 25 years old. I graduated from UNI with a degree in elementary education, taught for 3 years in Waterloo, then was looking for something else and found Try Pie."

What do you know you’re good at?

“I love having conversations and interacting with people I do and don't know. I have strong organizational skills, I'm good at prioritizing tasks and the important things in my life, and I have a passion for inclusion and equity."

What’s something new about Try Pie you’re excited to be a part of?

“I'm excited about the leadership dynamics of Try Pie. I love that the Juniors have leadership of the organization and team to help the younger students then become leaders the following year. I find it interesting that it's not just the adults on staff, but the girls that are almost fully running this store. I'm also excited about seeing the committees be put into play, that's just another way their leadership skills get to be utilized to help the store run."

Stop in the store and visit Ally and our team!
