Dr. Alex is a Physical Therapist in Wayne NJ who specializes in helping youth athletes, young adults, and avid gym goers eliminate pain, restore function, and perform at the highest level they want to achieve.
Alex was a competitive gymnast from age 5-17 and had a series of injuries that eventually prevented her from returning to sport. As a young adult she was able to restore her function through weight lifting and cross fit type workouts to stay healthy and remain in the gym. She understands how devastating an injury or pain can be and how it affects a person’s identity.
She became a Physical Therapist to learn the tools and techniques that will help all athletes and adults stay in their sport or in the gym. She has a passion for identifying the root cause of the issue and then creating a specific mobility and exercise routine to get athletes and adults back to their sport or activity as soon as possible. Her main goal is to provide a framework of tools that clients can use for the rest of their lives to stay active, be healthy, and achieve their highest goals!

I’ve been at this for a while now and what I’ve realized is that people don’t really care if they’re in pain 😅

If they did people would never wait 2 months, 6 months, or 2 years 🤯 to get treatment.

What I’ve noticed is that people come to me for help when their pain impedes their ability to participate in what they love to do.
-
This might be going for a hike, taking a group fitness class with your friends, or walking up and down the field coaching your kid’s soccer game.
-
The most important thing is realizing that everyone wants their pain to go away, but that is not what determines the most successful outcome.

Make sure that your provider is having that detailed conversation with you and everyone is clear on what the REAL goal is!

Dr. Andrew is a physical therapist that specializes in providing care to "athletes" looking to take their game to the next level. Andrew's definition of an "athlete" is if you breathe, eat, and move you are an athlete specific to what motivates you. Whether it's weekend warrior or getting back to college baseball, he tailors a program based on your needs through objective data and your goals to level up.
He understands it's not just "feeling better" that keeps you in the game. Performance is key when it comes to game time and how you train/educate yourself in the off-season creates your best ability-availability. You can't help yourself get to your goals or contribute to your team being on the bench. The funny thing about the off-season, there isn't one. We have different seasons we'll encounter as an athlete, but to create that edge that makes you standout is to continue to get better everyday even if it's by 1%.
As a former college athlete, Andrew understands what it takes to get to the next level. He has experience working with numerous populations from grade school level to the professional realm.

My patient’s tell me way too often that they’ve been told never to squat again and that it is bad for their knees.

I have lost count of how many times the same person is back squatting their body weight 3 weeks later.

Same thing goes for deadlifts or overhead pressing.

There is no such thing as a dangerous movement. However, there are movements that your body may not be ready for.

This is one of my favorite sayings because it’s true.

A cortisone shot or anti-inflammatory medication may be great at decreasing your pain lot swelling, but it’s really just putting a band aid on a bigger problem.
-
It’s alleviating a symptom, but it is not addressing the cause.
-
If your issue is the result of poor movement patterns, overuse, too much volume too quick, or inappropriate loads then your pain and swelling are going to come right back when the meds wear off.
-
Not to mention cortisone increases your risk of arthritis long term 🥵.
-
The solution has to be movement based if you want to address the cause and make REAL MEANINGFUL, LONG TERM change.
-
So the choice is yours.

Did you know that pathology can show up on an MRI in someone who is completely asymptomatic?

What does that mean?

Well, I’m glad you asked!
-
That means that someone can be completely PAIN FREE and have a tear, a bulge, or any other scary terms on MRI.
-
What does that matter?
-
Another great question.
-
This means that you can’t always trust the MRI. If a tear can be present without pain, that means that the tear might NOT be causing your pain.
-
We expect to see some wear and tear on your body. It’s kind of like wrinkles and gray hair. It’s bound to happen (sorry 🤷🏻♂️).
-
We try to prevent unnecessary surgeries, and we tend to be pretty damn successful.
-
Do you think surgery is your only option?…….let’s chat, I bet we can do a whole lot to get you back to the version of you you love.
