1. Sing two classical pieces of contrasting style best representing the prospective’s voice.

Does any student want to join Dr. Farris for “Der fliegende Holländer” Thursday night? He has a ticket that no one in his family wants.
Standard deal with a zero-sum gain: a free show, but you have to sit with Dr. Farris.

A humongous thank you for another successful choral camp in the books! All the students were so receptive to instruction and sang with their hearts full. Thank you so much to Miss Sandra Roulet and Dr. Laura Hillman for their great work with the choir through their marvelous piano skills. Thank you also to Cristy Gosset for her masterful work with the junior high choir. Their performance proved to be lovely and expressive on Wednesday. The high school choir also sang marvelously, and Dr. Farris was very fortunate to have such great singers onstage.
Thank you to college students Kim Berkenbile, Meghan Mudd, and Heath Chapman who sang with us on Wednesday. Thank you also to alumni teachers Guillermo Castellón, Avery Finley, and Elizabeth Edge for singing with us on the concerts and teaching during the week.
Thank you to the camp staff, Chrissy Hagood, Kathleen Jung, and the counselors for all of their work with the organization of the camps. Thank you to Lesley Friend for her music theater elective!

Two things:
1. One of my UNT colleagues who now sings in Germany full-time said in the past year that she feels a degree in vocal music is almost a “degree in memorization.” Singers just memorize, and it frees one to complete a performance with interp.
2. Another class of musicians who memorize are concert pianists. Watch Ólafsson here with how freely he plays and emotes (à la Liszt), and, as a secondary thing, he plays Bach on a piano and uses no pedal, keeping the keys depressed as he wants his durations to, well, endure.

An Oklahoma Center for Vocal Music Education
This is a page dedicated to the vocal activities at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Concert dates, audition dates, contact information, and other items of interest regarding vocal music at Southwestern will be posted here.
Auditions for program admission/scholarship are as follows:
1. Sing two classical pieces of contrasting style best representing the prospective’s voice.
2. Sightsing a 12-16 measure melody with tonicization, 2-minutes of study, re-tonicization, and then performance.
3. Go to a practice room with an excerpt of an art song to study/learn in whatever manner for 10 minutes, return to the faculty and perform the music with an accompanist playing for the student.

Opera workshop and auditions:
All students at Southwestern are able to audition for Opera Workshop. Rehearsals vary in schedule based on the production.
Auditions for opera workshop usually consist of a performance of a Western art song or, preferably, opera aria, in the bel canto style.
