A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for much of Deep South Texas, the Rio Grande Valley, and the lower Texas coastal waters until mid-morning Wednesday. Conditions are expected to deteriorate through the overnight hours. Residents in areas within the Tropical Storm Warning should take precautions and prepare for hazardous weather conditions into Wednesday morning.

[3:50pm Mon Aug 21] TROPICAL DEPRESSION #9 has formed in the central Gulf of Mexico this afternoon. We expect the depression to continue moving westward toward the South Texas coast reaching our area early tomorrow morning. For the RGV, this system is mainly a rainmaker. The heaviest rainfall should stay to our north, but widespread 1-2" totals are possible the next 36 hours.

{8:00AM MONDAY 8/21/2023} We're closely monitoring the tropics this morning! The area of cloud cover you're seeing in the Western Gulf is an area of showers and storms that are becoming more organized. This area could soon become a tropical depression. If it does become a tropical storm Harold would be the next name on the list. Widespread rain with heavy rain in spots could be in the Valley by late tonight/ tomorrow morning. There could also be watches/ warnings issued later today and tomorrow.

This disturbance now has a 70% chance of formation in the next 2 and 7 days. This system is moving westward around 15-20mph, a tropical depression is likely to form in the beginning of the work week. The main impact from this system is looking to be localized heavy rainfall. The best chance for rain for us here in the valley is Monday evening through Wednesday. {7:12pm Sunday}

{1:10pm} The National Hurricane Center has increased the chance for a tropical depression or storm in the Gulf of Mexico. They have a 40% chance for formation from Monday - Wednesday. The primary element with this tropical system will be soaking rains over south Texas. Stay tuned for more updates. Use this as a reminder to revisit stay/go plans, restock supplies, and check home/business resilience.

{10:07am Sunday} The Storm Prediction Center now has the entire valley under an Enhanced Risk(Level 3/5) for severe weather. Scattered storms will likely produce damaging winds and large hail around noon to 4PM today. The threat for a tornado or two is low but it is not zero. Stay weather aware and download our KRGV Weather app to stay updated on the latest weather alerts.

A severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 9pm this evening for all the valley. Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible with strong winds and large hail being the main threat. {2:44pm Friday}
