A little bit about her! She was born and raised in Roanoke, VA and graduated from High Point University in North Carolina in 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience. She attended the Kentucky College of Optometry where she served as the Class Senator, student member of the Private Practice Club, and College of Vision Development Club. She was awarded the Southern Council of Optometrists Clinical Excellence Award and graduated in May of 2024. She is passionate about pediatric optometric care and binocular vision disorders, as well as comprehensive ocular health evaluations for all ages!

What is Irlen Syndrome? Can vision therapy help treat it?
“Irlen syndrome, or scotopic sensitivity syndrome, was coined by an educational psychologist. She identified collapsed peripheral vision and spatial processing in struggling learners. She proposed it’s mediated by the rod cells of the retina, which is why she called it scotopic sensitivity syndrome.
I used to do colored overlay testing to see if it improved reading speed and reading fluency, and occasionally it does. I have now found when you treat the root cause of vision-based learning struggles, usually binocular vision dysfunction (which Irlen syndrome is identifying), you don’t need the colored overlays anymore. Optometric vision therapy is a root cause solution to Irlen Syndrome instead of relying on compensatory or bandaid tools.”

With contact lens health week underway, we had to hop on this trend.
But in all seriousness, please take the contact lens instructions we give you seriously😫 we’re not trying to be annoying, just trying to keep your eyes safe and healthy!
A few important reminders…
>It’s SO important to wash your hands before handling your lenses. We definitely don’t want to transfer the germs from our hands into our eyes🤢
>Use contact lens approved eye drops, store your lenses in contact lens solution (that needs to be changed daily!) and pleaseeeee don’t put them in your mouth!! Saliva is NOT sanitary
>Wear your lenses for the recommended amount of time. Daily really does mean a different lens every day (And that’s not a suggestion!)
>Sleeping in your contacts (unless approved by your doctor) is just a hard no. Increases the risk of infection and also leaves your eyes veryyy dry!
>Lenses are not meant to come into contact with water from a pool or from your shower, so wearing them during those times increases risk of infection as well.
We stress these things because we love you and your eyes!
